CHAPTER 121: THE IMPOSSIBLE BARRIER
Katakuri's expression shifted behind his scarf—a rare crack in his usual composure. Overlord's Haki infusion? To break through a defense? He had faced many Devil Fruit abilities in his lifetime, but nothing like this. Nothing that required the power of kings just to touch the user.
"You have Conqueror's Haki," Ember stated flatly, looking at Katakuri. It wasn't a question. They had clashed enough times over the years for Ember to know.
Katakuri's eyes narrowed. "I do. But infusion is different from mere possession. It requires mastery I haven't achieved."
"Then you're as useless as I am against him." Ember's voice carried bitter resignation. He had learned this lesson the hard way, in a defeat that still haunted him.
Satoru, still watching the Emperors battle, offered a casual observation over his shoulder. "So you two understand now? If I actually decide to move against your captains, there's nothing you can do to stop me." His tone wasn't mocking—just factual, the way one might explain that water was wet.
Katakuri's fist tightened. Ember's jaw clenched. But neither moved.
Because they knew he was right.
The tension on the ship multiplied as more figures arrived.
From the Big Mom Pirates: Perospero, with his candy-stained lips and calculating eyes. Smoothie, towering and long-legged, her expression unreadable. Oven, radiating heat and aggression. Snack, silent and watchful.
From the Beasts Pirates: Queen, with his round body and ever-present cigar. Jack, massive and blunt, his gaze fixed on Satoru like a predator sizing up prey. And others—lesser officers who had heard the commotion and come to investigate.
The small ship, already crowded with Ember's crew, now held some of the most powerful pirates in the New World outside the Emperors themselves.
Perospero moved to Katakuri's side, his voice a low whisper. "What's happening? Why is an Admiral here, and why are we standing around talking?"
Katakuri didn't look away from Satoru. "He's watching the battle. And apparently—" his voice dropped further, "—considering whether to act afterward."
Perospero's eyes widened behind his candy cane. "Against Mother?"
"Against both Emperors. If they weaken each other enough."
The implications hit Perospero like a physical blow. He looked at Satoru—at the boy who couldn't be more than twelve or thirteen, sitting casually on the railing with his back to some of the most dangerous pirates in the world—and felt something he rarely experienced.
Fear.
"Can we—" he started, but Katakuri cut him off.
"No. Even with everyone here, we can't stop him if he decides to act."
Perospero's voice rose despite himself. "That's absurd! There are dozens of us! The combined strength of two Emperor crews—"
"Means nothing." Ember had overheard and turned to face them. His expression was grim, haunted. "I faced him alone. I thought my strength would be enough. It wasn't. I couldn't touch him. Couldn't even reach him." He looked at his own hands, as if remembering. "He has a barrier. An invisible wall that stops everything—unless you have Conqueror's Haki infusion. And even then..."
He trailed off, but everyone understood. Even with the right tools, defeating Satoru was far from certain.
Jack, never one for subtlety, stomped forward. His massive frame seemed to fill the deck. "Brother Ember! Are you saying that even with all of us—me, Queen, Katakuri, the others—we couldn't take this one little Admiral?!"
Ember met his gaze steadily. "That's exactly what I'm saying."
Queen let out a nervous laugh, his many chins wobbling. "Now, now, let's not be hasty. Kaido-sama did say to avoid provoking this one..."
"Kaido-sama said that?!" Perospero's voice cracked. "The same Kaido who wants to start the greatest war in the world?"
"The same." Queen puffed his cigar, trying to appear calm. "Said he was 'troublesome.' Those were his exact words."
The assembled pirates exchanged glances. If Kaido thought someone was troublesome enough to avoid...
Satoru, still facing the island, spoke without turning. "You know, I can hear all of you perfectly well. My abilities aren't just for show."
The pirates stiffened.
"And for what it's worth, I'm not planning to do anything right now. I'm here to watch, same as you. That CP0 agent was the one stirring trouble, not me." He finally glanced back, a lazy smile on his face. "If you want to fight someone, find him. I'd actually appreciate it—he's been annoying me for a while."
Perospero's eyes narrowed. "You expect us to believe an Admiral is on our side?"
"I don't expect you to believe anything. I'm just stating facts." Satoru turned back to the battle. "Believe what you want. But while you're standing here threatening me, that CP0 agent is probably positioning himself to take advantage of the situation. Just saying."
Katakuri's future sight flickered. He saw possibilities—the agent appearing behind a weakened Emperor, striking at exactly the wrong moment. The vision wasn't certain, but it was possible.
"He's right," Katakuri said quietly. "The CP0 agent is a greater immediate threat. We can watch the Admiral. We can't watch an agent we can't find."
Perospero sputtered. "You can't be serious! Leaving an Admiral—"
"I'm serious." Katakuri's voice brooked no argument. "Spread out. Find that agent. The Admiral stays here, where we can see him."
For a long moment, no one moved. Then, slowly, the pirates began to disperse—some to search, some to watch, all of them casting uneasy glances at the white-haired figure on the railing.
Ember was the last to leave. He stood beside Satoru for a moment, looking out at the battle raging on what remained of Wheat Island.
"Why are you really here?" he asked quietly.
Satoru didn't look at him. "I told you. To watch."
"That's not all."
A pause. Then Satoru's voice, softer than before. "No. It's not." He finally glanced at Ember, and for just a moment, the mask slipped. Ember saw something complicated in those hidden eyes—weariness, conflict, purpose. "But it's all I'm going to tell you."
Ember nodded slowly. He understood. Some things couldn't be shared, even—especially—between enemies.
He turned to leave, then paused. "For what it's worth... I hope you're not planning to fight them. Either of them. Because if you do..." He didn't finish.
Satoru's smile returned. "If I do, you'll try to stop me. I know."
Ember walked away, leaving Satoru alone with the battle.
On the island, Kaido and Big Mom continued their devastating clash. The island was barely recognizable now—just jagged remnants of rock surrounded by churning sea. Every exchange carved new chunks from what remained.
Satoru watched, cataloging everything. Their techniques, their timing, the way they moved, the way they thought. This was priceless intelligence—the kind that could only be gained by witnessing Emperors at war.
If I had to fight them, he calculated, what would I do? How would I win?
The answers weren't encouraging. Even exhausted, even wounded, either Emperor would be a nightmare opponent. Both together...
Not good odds. Not good at all.
But the CP0 agent's words echoed in his mind. The World Government watches. Always.
They wanted him to act. They were daring him to act. And if he didn't...
Questions about loyalty. About priorities. He almost laughed. As if he had loyalty to a government that ordered the murder of innocent civilians. As if his priorities aligned with theirs.
But for now, he watched. And waited.
The battle raged on.
Elsewhere on the fleet, the search for the CP0 agent continued. Pirates from both crews combed through ships, checked every shadow, every hiding place. But the agent was good—trained in stealth, in evasion, in becoming invisible when it mattered most.
He watched from a hidden position, observing the chaos he had sown with a few well-chosen words. The Admiral and the pirates, now suspicious of each other. The crews, divided in their attention. Perfect conditions for... opportunities.
His Den Den Mushi buzzed quietly. A message from above.
Observe only. Do not engage. The Admiral's actions will be... noted.
He smiled behind his mask. The game was just beginning.
On Ember's ship, Satoru's Six Eyes caught a flicker of movement—too fast, too subtle for anyone else to notice. He knew exactly where the agent was hiding.
But he said nothing.
Let the agent watch. Let him report. Let the World Government think they had him cornered.
Because Satoru had plans of his own. And they didn't involve dancing to anyone's tune.
On the island, Kaido roared in fury as Big Mom's blade opened a gash across his chest. She laughed, a terrifying sound, even as his kanabo slammed into her side hard enough to crack stone.
The battle continued. The world watched.
And in the middle of it all, a twelve-year-old Admiral sat on a pirate ship, surrounded by enemies, and smiled.
