Chapter 152 - Chapter 152: Shukaku Returns to the Sand

Sayo stood up, taking one last long, steady look at the deceased elder who had imparted countless invaluable lessons to him. Master Bunpuku had served as a teacher, a strategist, and a friend, acting as the only moral anchor in a village that had often forgotten its humanity. With a heavy heart, Sayo resolutely turned and walked out of the dim, incense-scented chamber of the temple.

Outside, the atmosphere was thick enough to suffocate a man. Under the cold, mercury-like light of the moon, nearly the entire high command of Sunagakure was arrayed across the canyon floor. Led by the Fourth Kazekage Rasa, the assembly included Elders Chiyo and Ebizō, along with the captains of every primary combat corps. Elite Anbu and members of the Puppet Squad were spread out in a wide, aggressive perimeter, their weapons unsheathed and their chakra signatures pulsing at high-alert frequencies.

To Sayo's calculating mind, the scene looked like a village on the very brink of disaster. The death of a Jinchuriki and the potential loss of control over a Tailed Beast were variables that could plunge the village into absolute chaos.

"Sayo, you should be clear about the catastrophic risks involved here!" Rasa's voice was a harsh, metallic rasp that carried clearly through the night wind. He stood at the center of the formation, his white Kazekage robes fluttering. "If Shukaku loses control, the village will be the first place to be erased! Its power is a force of nature that we cannot-"

"Kazekage-sama," Sayo interrupted, his voice calm yet possessing a frequency that cut through Rasa's warning like a surgical blade. He swept his gaze over every solemn-faced official present. "I am not requesting permission; I am informing you of a final directive. This is Bunpuku-sensei's last wish, and more importantly, it is a covenant between Shukaku and myself."

He took a slow, deliberate step forward, the biting night wind stirring his black hair. Beneath the starlit sky, his dark pupils shimmered with an undeniable, cold resolve.

"I understand your security concerns. But I guarantee, by my honor, by the strength I have proven, and by the oath I make here that I will manage the beast. Shukaku will not become a disaster for Sunagakure. If he truly breaks his word..." He paused, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet tone, "I will personally be responsible for putting the beast down."

His words carried an immense weight of confidence. It was a confidence backed by a record of feats that no one in the village could ignore. Sayo had built the oases of the East Sea Bay, shattered the Hidden Mist's naval pride, and recently fought the Kazekage himself to a definitive stalemate. Even without tapping into the primal energies of the natural world, he was the most powerful individual in the Land of Wind.

His authority was absolute, and he could see the political tension in the air beginning to ease as the leaders realized he would truly take the burden upon himself.

Rasa gazed at Sayo, seeing the young man who had once been a sickly apprentice now standing as an architect of national destiny. After a long, heavy silence, the Kazekage's taut jawline finally relaxed, softening into an almost inaudible sigh of resignation. Chiyo and Ebizō exchanged a glance, a silent communication of relief and trust, and gave a nearly imperceptible nod.

"...Go do it," Rasa finally commanded, his voice deep and solemn. He waved a hand toward the perimeter. "Everyone, maintain the highest alert. Do not engage unless I give the final order!"

Sayo offered a shallow, respectful bow. Without another word, he turned and disappeared back into the stone shadows of the temple.

Inside the central chamber, he knelt beside Bunpuku's cot. He formed a complex, ancient sequence of hand seals, his fingers moving with a precision that bypassed human limits. He was undoing a lock that had been fastened for decades. Eerie, indigo light began to flicker along the monk's abdomen as the sealing runes detached and dissipated like bioluminescent shadows.

At that exact heartbeat, Bunpuku's final rhythm ceased. His face remained peaceful, a faint smile of terminal relief etched into his features as his life finally faded away.

The next moment, the air in the room didn't just vibrate; it was torn apart. A massive, violent surge of hatred-filled chakra erupted from the vacuum left by the seal!

"ROAR-!!!"

A colossal, tanuki-shaped titan constructed of dense, living sand shot skyward. The force of the eruption shattered the temple's ancient stone dome, sending bricks, timber, and centuries of dust scattering into the canyon. Shukaku's mountain-sized body appeared under the moonlight, his tan frame laced with dark-purple sealing marks. He roared toward the heavens, the sound waves rolling across the desert for miles, a scream filled with the pure ecstasy of a long-imprisoned spirit gaining its freedom.

"I'M OUT! THIS LORD IS FINALLY OUT! HAHAHA!" Shukaku waved his massive, clawed forelimbs, his chakra storm whipping up a sandstorm that threatened to bury the valley.

Outside, the Suna ninjas turned pale, their hands trembling as they gripped their weapons. Rasa's Gold Dust was already suspended in defensive clouds, and Chiyo's fingers were hooked onto her chakra threads, ready to deploy.

However, after a burst of maniacal, grating laughter, Shukaku's massive yellow eyes suddenly locked onto the small figure standing amidst the rubble. Sayo was standing quietly beside Bunpuku's peaceful remains, looking up to meet the beast's gaze with a clinical, unmoving focus.

"Hey! Sayo, you brat!" Shukaku's voice boomed like thunder. "Seeing as you and that old monk were somewhat pleasing to me, I am in a good mood today! I won't turn your village into a graveyard just yet! Until next time, hahaha!"

The beast made a move to sink into the desert floor, intending to vanish into the deep dunes.

"Shukaku." Sayo's voice was soft, yet it possessed a piercing clarity that penetrated the roar of the sandstorm. "Do you still remember our agreement? The oath?"

Shukaku froze, lowering his massive, jagged head. He stared at Sayo suspiciously. "Agreement? Freedom is freedom! I can do whatever I want now! The cage is open!"

"Guard the Land of Wind. Do not cause unnecessary disasters. Answer the call in wartime." Sayo repeated the clauses word for word, his voice a steady anchor in the chaos. "This is what you promised Master Bunpuku. This is the contract you signed with me."

"That was just to put the old monk at ease so he'd remove the seal!" Shukaku cackled slyly, his voice like grinding stones. "Now that he's gone, do you plan to use that silver giant of yours to order me around too?"

Sayo didn't answer with a threat. He didn't summon the Gundam. He merely stood there, his presence calm and profound, his dark eyes radiating a seriousness that carried the weight of the planet's own power. He was looking at the beast not as a weapon, but as a sovereign peer.

Shukaku stared back for a long heartbeat, his violent chakra crackling. Suddenly, he flicked his massive tail in an exaggerated display of annoyance, kicking up a blinding cloud of dust.

"Hmph! Annoying! I know the rules! You bothersome brat... you're just as stubborn as that old monk! Always sticking to your logic!"

He didn't explicitly admit to the pact, but the aggression drained out of his posture. His massive body began to slowly liquefy and sink, merging back into the desert floor like a drop of water returning to its original ocean. The terrifying, violent chakra aura didn't vanish; instead, it began to peacefully resonate with the entire sea of sand, becoming a part of the Land of Wind itself.

"This sand... this will be my home!" Shukaku's voice gradually deepened, fading into the howl of the wind. "...Don't bother me while I'm resting..."

Finally, the desert returned to a superficial calmness. Only the shattered shell of the temple and the settling dust remained as evidence of the transition.

Sayo stood rooted to the spot, gazing for a long time at the patch of sand where Shukaku had vanished. Then, he looked back at Bunpuku. The monk looked as if he were merely resting after a long day's work.

The Guardian Beast was now part of the desert, Sayo thought, his hand touching the furnace on his wrist. The monk has found peace, and the beast has found a home. The world is finally balanced.

The night wind blew past, bringing the whispers of the distant dunes. The desert had witnessed a farewell, and it now carried the heavy, hopeful weight of a new promise.
