Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: The Weight of Consequences

Chapter 32: The Weight of Consequences

Morning arrived over Konohagakure as usual.

Merchants opened their shops along the busy streets. Shinobi patrols rotated shifts along the village perimeter. Civilians walked through the markets, chatting casually as sunlight slowly spread across the rooftops.

The smell of fresh food drifted from small street stalls, and shopkeepers called out to passing customers. Children ran between the crowds while travelers entered the village gates.

The village looked peaceful.

Calm.

Orderly.

No one knew that something significant had already happened beyond the gates of konoha.

Inside the Hokage Tower—

The atmosphere was completely different.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

The silence inside the office felt thick, as if the air itself had become difficult to breathe.

Inside the room stood two men who supposedly carried the burden of the entire village.

The Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi.

And the leader of Root, Danzō Shimura.

Both of their expressions were grim.

Danzo in particular looked unusually cold, his visible eye sharp and dark, as if it wished to devour someone whole.

A scroll containing the full report rested on the Hokage's desk between them.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Danzo broke the silence.

"Hiruzen… we cannot allow him to escape."

Hiruzen slowly nodded.

His face looked older than usual.

"Indeed," he said quietly.

"We cannot."

Both of them had already received the full report regarding Uchiha Kenzo.

And the result was unacceptable.

Root had suffered a heavy loss.

Two of Danzo's trusted operatives had died.

Both were elite jōnin-level shinobi.

The deaths of Torune Aburame and Fū Yamanaka were not small matters.

Within Konoha, high-level combat forces were limited.

There were only a few dozen jōnin in the entire village.

Among them, elite operatives were even rarer.

Losing two in a single incident was enough to cause unrest within the village.

And their identities made the situation even more troublesome.

Torune belonged to the Aburame Clan.

Fū belonged to the Yamanaka Clan.

Both were respected clans within Konoha.

Sooner or later—

Questions would be asked.

Explanations would be demanded.

Hiruzen took a slow breath.

This time he did not reach for his pipe.

Danzo spoke again.

"You have seen the report."

His voice was calm, but his gaze remained sharp.

"What a strategic and ruthless character that boy possesses."

Hiruzen remained silent.

Danzo continued.

"When Torune and the others arrived at the forest, the fire was already burning."

"He deliberately set it."

"To ensure they would notice."

"To ensure they would pursue him."

Hiruzen's brows slowly furrowed.

Danzo's voice remained cold.

"Then he deliberately misled them downstream."

"If Torune had not noticed the inconsistency quickly, they would have completely lost his trail."

"In the battle that followed…"

"He fought more like a member of the Nara Clan than an Uchiha Clan."

"Calm."

"Patient."

"Manipulating the battlefield."

Hiruzen's expression darkened slightly.

Danzo's final words were the coldest.

"And in the end…"

"He sacrificed his own arm without hesitation in order to eliminate his opponent."

Danzo's eye narrowed slightly.

"That is not something a normal sixteen-year-old should be capable of."

Hiruzen's fist suddenly slammed against the desk.

"Enough, Danzo."

The sharp sound echoed briefly through the office before silence returned.

Hiruzen closed his eyes for a moment.

Of course he knew.

From the moment he had first looked into the boy's eyes—

He had already sensed it.

The depth within them.

The cold resolve.

The boy had never been ordinary.

Hiruzen slowly opened his eyes again.

"So what are you trying to say, Danzo?"

His voice was steady.

But sharp.

He knew Danzo too well.

Danzo would not speak this long without wanting something.

Danzo did not waste time.

"First."

"We place an S-rank bounty on him."

Hiruzen considered it for a moment before nodding.

"That can be arranged."

"But it will not be announced publicly inside the village."

Danzo gave a small nod.

"Of course."

"It will circulate through underground channels."

Bounty hunters.

Mercenaries.

Information brokers.

Sooner or later, someone would find him.

But Danzo was not finished.

"And secondly…"

His voice grew colder.

"I want authorization for Root to pursue him beyond the borders of the Land of Fire."

Hiruzen's eyes narrowed slightly.

Danzo continued calmly.

"That boy possesses the Sharingan."

"If he falls into the hands of another village…"

"The consequences will not be small."

The room fell quiet once again.

Outside the window, the village continued its normal morning routine.

Inside the office, however, the future of one shinobi was being decided.

Hiruzen knew Danzo's reasoning was correct.

If another village captured Kenzo—

The political consequences would be disastrous.

After several long seconds—

Hiruzen finally spoke.

"You will pursue him."

"But Root will not operate freely."

Danzo remained silent.

Hiruzen's voice became firm.

"ANBU will oversee the operation."

"This pursuit will remain under Hokage authority."

Danzo's eye narrowed slightly.

But he did not argue.

"…Very well."

"Make sure to check the area where he disappeared thoroughly," Hiruzen added.

"With his injuries, he should not have escaped too far."

Danzo nodded slightly.

"I will make sure of that."

The decision had been made.

Unfortunately for them—

They did not realize that Kenzo had already thrown himself into the river during the battle.

The rain during the night had swollen the river, turning the current violent and fast. By the time Root operatives arrived at the battlefield, most traces had already been washed away.

Footprints had vanished.

Blood had been diluted and carried away by the flowing water.

Even the faint scent used by tracking shinobi had been erased by the storm.

And with Fū Yamanaka's mind completely destroyed, they were unable to extract any information about how the battle had truly ended.

The trail had vanished.

And somewhere deep within the forests of the Land of Fire—

An injured boy drifted further and further away from Konohagakure, carried downstream by the raging river.

His body was barely conscious.

His blood slowly mixing with the cold water.

Unaware of what decision had been made in Konoha.

The raging current carried him deeper through the forests of the Land of Fire.

Far away from the village that had already marked him as an enemy.
