Chapter 15 - Signals and Shadows

Night settled over the abandoned observatory like a heavy blanket.

Wind moved through the broken roof panels, whistling softly as the seven girls gathered around an old control table covered with maps, phones, and scattered notebooks.

Ava dropped onto a chair with a sigh.

"My arms feel like jelly."

"That's because you tried to punch through a tree," Mira said.

"I almost succeeded."

"You almost broke your hand."

Riven stood near the window, staring out at the dark hills beyond the observatory.

"Again tomorrow," she said.

Ava groaned loudly. "You're kidding."

"No."

Luna laughed quietly. "She's not."

Nyra wasn't listening.

Her eyes were fixed on her GeneShift bracelet.

It pulsed faintly.

Once.

Twice.

Then a new light appeared inside the device.

Nyra's expression changed.

"That's… new."

Everyone looked at her.

"What's new?" Ava asked.

Nyra slowly tapped the bracelet.

A small holographic interface flickered above it.

Symbols rotated in the air like fragments of alien code.

Riven stepped closer.

"What are we looking at?"

Nyra studied the symbols carefully.

"The GeneShift system."

"Yeah, we know that," Ava said.

Nyra shook her head.

"No. I mean the full system."

The hologram shifted.

Seven icons appeared.

Then more icons formed behind them.

Layers.

Locked sections.

Ava blinked. "Wait… are those…"

"Additional forms," Nyra said.

The room went silent.

Mira leaned closer.

"You mean we can turn into more aliens?"

Nyra nodded slowly.

"It looks like each GeneShift contains multiple genetic templates."

Riven's eyes narrowed.

"How many?"

Nyra hesitated.

"At least five."

Ava nearly fell out of her chair.

"Five?!"

"Per host," Nyra said.

"Meaning…"

Mira finished the sentence quietly.

"Thirty-five possible forms."

Luna stared at her bracelet.

"So what we used before…"

"Was only the first one," Nyra said.

Riven crossed her arms.

"Why didn't we know that?"

Nyra pointed at the hologram.

"Because the others are locked."

Symbols flashed again.

Several forms remained sealed behind glowing barriers.

"Something is unlocking them slowly," Nyra explained.

"Stress… combat… adaptation."

Ava laughed nervously.

"So the more we almost die, the stronger we get."

"Basically," Mira said.

Riven didn't smile.

"That means the system expects us to fight."

The wind outside suddenly picked up.

Nyra's bracelet flickered again.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"There's another signal."

Riven turned immediately.

"Alien?"

Nyra shook her head slowly.

"Watching."

Far away on the skeleton of an unfinished skyscraper, a tall figure stood perfectly still.

Below him, the city lights stretched endlessly.

In his hand, a scanning device displayed seven pulsing markers.

Energy signatures.

Training bursts.

Genetic compatibility readings.

The figure studied the data with interest.

"They evolve quickly."

He closed the scanner.

Moonlight revealed the faint crimson glow in his eyes.

"My name is **Rooder."

His voice carried quietly into the wind.

"And you are not ready."

He turned away from the edge of the building.

"But you will be."

For now…

He would watch.

He would wait.

Because hunters never rushed the first strike.

Back at the observatory, the girls still studied the holographic display.

Ava pointed at one of the locked symbols.

"So… how do we unlock these?"

Nyra looked at the device carefully.

"It says…"

She paused.

"What?"

Nyra looked up.

"Evolution through conflict."

Riven nodded slowly.

"Then we keep training."

Mira sighed.

"Of course that's the answer."

Outside, thunder rolled across the distant hills.

And somewhere beyond the darkness, both enemies and hunters were already moving.

The war for Earth had only just begun.
