Rogan remained still.
"I asked you," Jerold continued, "why would a lone wolf want to join a small pack like mine."
A faint, almost nostalgic exhale left him.
"You told me there wasn't a reason." His eyes shifted back to Rogan. "I knew that wasn't the whole truth but I saw the little girl beside you and whatever questions I had, I let them go."
Jerold's voice wasn't accusing, it was thoughtful.
"You worked hard for this pack, Rogan. You never failed me and never betrayed us."
Jerold stepped closer.
"That is why I never pushed, I never questioned."
Rogan didn't move or said anything. He just stood there frozen, trying to find a convincing answer.
Just then, Jerold's gaze sharpened slightly. "But I have always known you were different."
He paused and then looked away. "I always knew you were different from the rest of us."
"Your powers were concealed and controlled but you carry something in you."
"An aura," Jerold added quietly. "One I have never felt in any wolf before."
