Chase POV
She slept in my arms. And I watched.
I was holding my breath, afraid to breathe. Afraid that even the tinest jolt might wake her.
Her breathing was slow. Even.
Her face was pressed against my chest. Her fingers were curled into my shirt like she was afraid I would disappear.
Which was ironic. She was the one actively disappearing in front of my eyes.
I didn't move. I couldn't.
If I moved, I might wake her. If I woke her, she would pull away. She would remember who I was. What I had done. What my family had done. And so, I held my breath.
And I stroked her hair.
It was wet. Tangled. It smelled like rain and woodsmoke. I didn't care. I just kept stroking it.
"My wife" I murmured to myself. "You are my wife, Tilly"
The rain hammered against the roof. The wind rattled the windows. It seemed like someone angered the goddess.
Good. Someone should be angry alongside me.
"You are my wife" I whispered again. "I want to tell you my truth, sweet girl"
My truth.
