Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 – I The sign that no one understands

Several days passed since that strange morning when Raven found the small tracks near the stream. Since then nothing obvious had happened that he could explain. The forest had returned to its usual quiet rhythm. Birds sang at sunrise, the wind moved through the trees, and the water continued its slow flow between the stones.

Yet one small thing remained in Raven's mind.

The stone he had found near the water.

It did not appear very different from any other stone. If someone else saw it, they would probably think it was completely ordinary. But Raven did not feel that way. Every time he took it out of his pocket and looked at it, something about it felt unusual. Something he could not explain.

On a cold morning Raven sat on a rock near the stream. He took the stone from his pocket and slowly turned it between his fingers.

It was smooth.

But not smooth like stones polished by water.

Its surface felt slightly different, as if something had once pressed against it long ago.

He stared at it silently.

Then he noticed something.

A faint line.

Very thin.

Almost invisible.

He brought the stone closer and focused his eyes.

It was not just a scratch.

It looked more like a mark.

A small line crossing part of the stone's surface. It was not perfectly straight. It curved slightly before ending suddenly.

Raven frowned a little.

The line did not feel random.

It looked like part of something larger… something incomplete.

He turned the stone again.

Then he froze.

There was another line.

Fainter than the first one, but still there.

Raven sat quietly for a long time.

His mind tried to understand what he was seeing.

Were they simply natural scratches?

Perhaps.

But something inside him did not fully believe that.

The two lines did not seem entirely random.

There was a strange balance between them.

Almost as if one completed the other.

Time passed while he continued staring at the stone.

Eventually he placed it on the ground in front of him.

With a small stick he carefully drew the same lines in the dirt exactly as they appeared on the stone.

Then he sat and studied the drawing.

It was not clear.

Just two slightly curved lines.

But after several minutes something about them felt strange.

The lines almost looked like part of a symbol.

An incomplete symbol.

But a symbol of what?

He did not know.

After a while he wiped the drawing away with his hand.

Then he slowly stood up.

He placed the stone back into his pocket.

Perhaps it meant nothing.

Perhaps they were only natural scratches.

Yet despite that thought…

He could not remove the idea from his mind.

During the following days Raven returned to the stream several times.

He sat there for long hours.

Watching the water.

Watching the trees.

Sometimes watching the ground.

Once again he found no tracks like the ones he had seen before.

But one evening something small happened.

The orange light of the setting sun passed between the trees when Raven noticed something on the trunk of a nearby tree.

He stopped.

Then slowly walked closer.

At first he saw nothing.

Then…

He noticed it.

A line.

Very faint.

Carved into the bark.

It did not look like a natural scratch.

It looked like an old mark.

Raven bent slightly to look more carefully.

And then a cold feeling passed through his body.

The line…

Looked similar to one of the lines on the stone.

Not exactly the same.

But very close.

He stepped back slightly.

Then looked around.

The forest was quiet as always.

No sounds except the wind.

No movement except the leaves.

He looked back at the tree trunk.

The mark was small.

Barely visible.

If someone passed by, they might never notice it.

But Raven had noticed it.

He stood there for a long time.

Finally he reached out and touched the mark with his fingers.

It felt old.

That was the strange impression he had.

Not new.

But not extremely ancient either.

He remained there for several minutes.

Then he slowly stepped away from the tree.

When he reached the stream again, he took the stone out of his pocket.

He looked at the two lines on its surface.

Then he remembered the mark on the tree.

For a brief moment he felt as though something connected them.

But his mind found no explanation.

He sat near the water until darkness slowly covered the forest.

While walking back, he passed the same tree again.

This time…

He did not look at it.

Almost as if he did not want to think about it any further.

But the truth was different.

Because deep inside he already knew one thing.

That mark…

Was not a coincidence.

And the stone…

Was not just a stone.

But what did it mean?

That question stayed with Raven that night.

A small question…

Yet it was the beginning of a mystery that would not end easily.
