Chapter 120 - Episode 118: The Tent / The Night That Refused to End Quietly

The tent never fully settled, even long after everyone had crawled inside.

Bags had been pushed into the corners and shoes left scattered near the entrance, yet a strange restlessness still lingered in the air. It felt as if the night itself had refused to fall asleep.

A small lantern hung from the centre pole, casting a dim, slightly yellow glow. Its flame flickered gently every time the wind pressed against the thin fabric walls.

Outside, the forest breathed slowly and deeply, alive with its own hidden rhythm.

Inside, six people lay in the semi-darkness, trying hard to pretend they didn't feel the same restless energy.

Kai was the first one to break the silence.

"Why is it so quiet in here?" he muttered, shifting onto his elbow with a restless sigh. "This is supposed to be an exciting trip, not some kind of funeral."

"No one asked you to start talking," Chen replied without opening his eyes, his voice flat and tired.

"That's exactly the problem," Kai shot back quickly. "You never ask."

A faint huff of amusement came from Rui somewhere near the back of the tent. Dev let out a soft chuckle under his breath.

The tent fabric shifted slightly as someone turned over in their sleeping bag.

"Sleep," Chen said again, sounding more like a command this time.

"Boring," Kai answered almost instantly, refusing to let the quiet win.

Jian lay flat on his back, one arm folded comfortably under his head. His eyes remained fixed on the tent ceiling above, watching the small lantern sway gently with every passing breeze.

Just across from him — close enough to reach out and touch, yet not quite doing so — Wei lay turned toward the side.

Facing away from everyone.

Or maybe not completely.

It was difficult to tell in the dim, flickering light.

Kai suddenly sat up straight, full of fresh energy.

"I have an idea," he announced.

"No," Chen replied immediately, not even bothering to open his eyes this time.

"You don't even know what it is yet."

"I already know it's stupid."

"It's not stupid," Kai insisted, his voice rising with excitement. "It's actually brilliant."

A heavy silence followed.

Then Dev's lazy but curious voice broke through the quiet.

"…Go on, say it first."

Kai grinned widely, even though almost no one was looking at him in the low light.

"Let's go into the forest."

That suggestion finally got a real reaction from the group.

Rui lifted his head slightly from his pillow. "At night? Are you serious?"

"That's the whole point," Kai said with growing enthusiasm. "When else would we do it?"

"Or," Chen added in a completely flat tone, "we could just stay here and not get ourselves lost in the dark."

"We won't get lost," Kai waved the concern away easily. "We're literally right next to the camp. It's not that far."

"There's a reason why people don't wander into forests at night," Chen reminded him.

"Yeah," Kai nodded without hesitation. "Because they're all too boring."

A short pause hung in the air.

Then, in a softer voice, he added, "We could play something instead."

Dev shifted in his sleeping bag. "Like what?"

Kai leaned forward, lowering his voice as if the idea needed secrecy.

"Hide and seek."

Rui let out a quiet laugh, clearly surprised. "You're kidding, right?"

The reaction spread through the tent almost instantly.

A low chuckle escaped from Dev.

Rui shook his head in disbelief.

Even Chen exhaled — something that sounded surprisingly close to amusement.

"In the dark?" Rui asked. "You'll be the first one to cry."

"I won't," Kai replied confidently.

"You absolutely will."

"Sleep," Chen repeated once more.

This time his voice was quieter.

More final.

And just like that, the wild idea seemed to drop and fade away.

The lantern dimmed even further, softening the entire space inside the tent. Long shadows stretched across the thin walls, blurring the edges of everything and gently softening the faces around them.

The air had grown noticeably warmer inside, but every now and then a thin, cold thread of wind slipped through the fabric whenever a stronger gust pressed against it.

Someone shifted again.

The soft sound of a zipper being pulled broke the quiet for a moment.

Then everything returned to stillness.

Kai exhaled loudly into the darkness.

He wasn't tired at all.

Just… unbearably bored.

"This is it?" he muttered, staring into the dark. "We came all the way up here… just to sleep?"

"No one is stopping you from leaving if you want," Chen said from somewhere to his right, his voice low and calm, eyes still closed.

"I might actually do it," Kai replied.

"Then go."

A long pause followed.

Kai didn't move.

Rui let out another quiet laugh. "You won't."

"Watch me."

"You'll freeze in five minutes and come running back."

"At least I'll have a good story to tell," Kai muttered under his breath.

On the other side of the tent, Jian now lay completely still, one arm resting over his eyes.

He wasn't asleep.

Just… very quiet.

Wei hadn't moved much either.

He remained turned slightly away from the group.

But he no longer seemed completely closed off.

Not anymore.

The silence stretched on again.

Longer this time.

But it didn't feel heavy.

It simply felt like it was waiting for something.

"…there's nothing to do," Kai said once more.

His voice was softer now.

Less like complaining.

More like he was simply thinking out loud.

Dev shifted onto his back and sighed. "Sleep is also an activity, you know."

"Not for me."

"No one asked you."

Kai sat up slowly this time.

Not sudden or loud.

Just… quietly deciding something.

The lantern light caught the side of his face, highlighting his determined expression.

"You know what would actually make this trip memorable?"

No one answered right away.

But no one tried to stop him either.

He glanced toward the tent entrance, then looked back at the others.

A small grin formed on his lips.

Not his usual chaotic one.

Something quieter.

More deliberate.

"…we steal something."

Chen opened his eyes at once.

Not annoyed.

Just… suddenly alert.

"From where?" Rui asked, already half-laughing at the idea.

Kai tilted his head slightly, eyes shining with mischief.

"Other tents."

A beat of surprised silence passed.

Dev let out a low whistle. "You're actually serious?"

"Very serious."

"That's not a game," Chen said carefully.

"That's exactly why it's going to be fun," Kai replied.

Rui pushed himself up a little, interest slowly creeping in despite himself. "…what exactly do we steal?"

"Anything," Kai said with a shrug. "Food. Snacks. Whatever we can find."

"No groups," Dev added, his voice now quietly engaged.

"Yeah," Kai nodded quickly. "Everyone goes alone."

"And whoever brings back the most wins," Rui finished the thought.

"And whoever comes back with nothing…" Kai shrugged lightly.

"…loses," Chen said in a flat, final tone.

For a moment, no one spoke.

The wind moved through the trees outside once again.

The lantern flickered softly.

Wei's eyes were now wide open.

Jian slowly lowered the arm from his face, looking across the dim space toward Wei.

Wei felt the gaze immediately.

He didn't turn fully toward him.

But he didn't ignore it either.

"…you'll get caught," Jian said quietly, almost under his breath.

Wei's fingers shifted slightly against the fabric of his sleeping bag.

"…maybe."

A short pause hung between them.

Then, softly—

"…don't."

The words slipped out before Jian could stop them.

Wei turned his head just a little.

Not enough to face him completely.

But enough.

"…you won't?" he asked, voice barely above a whisper.

Jian didn't answer right away.

Then, after a moment—

"…depends."

Something small and unspoken passed between them in the dim light.

Not clear.

Not named.

But definitely there.

Kai clapped his hands together softly once.

"Alright. Everyone decide."

Chen sat up with a quiet sigh of resignation.

"…five minutes," he said. "We don't go far."

"Stay within the area of the tents," Dev added.

"No getting caught," Rui reminded them.

"That part is obvious," Kai grinned.

Movement quietly filled the tent again.

Careful and deliberate.

Jackets were pulled on.

Shoes were slipped back onto feet.

The zipper was opened slowly and carefully.

A rush of cold night air immediately poured inside.

Kai slipped out first.

Of course he did.

Rui followed right after.

Then Dev.

Chen paused briefly at the entrance — counting heads and watching carefully.

Wei stood up last.

For a second, he remained completely still.

Jian was already near the exit.

Not exactly waiting.

But not leaving without him either.

Wei stepped forward.

Close enough to feel the warmth.

Not touching.

Then —

they both stepped out into the night.

The night felt much wider and more open outside the tent.

The forest appeared darker and deeper than before.

Tents were scattered around them with faint, sleepy lights glowing here and there.

Distant voices could be heard for a moment.

Then everything went quiet again.

Kai turned around, walking backward with a wide grin on his face.

"Don't get caught."

Chen exhaled sharply. "You definitely will."

Wei moved forward without saying a single word.

Slipping silently into the narrow spaces between the tents.

Jian watched him go for just a second longer.

Then he followed.

Not too close.

Not too far.

The night held them all once again.

But this time —

they had chosen to move inside it.
