Chapter 125 - Episode 123:The Walk Back / What Stayed Between Them

They didn't move right away.

Even after the laughter had faded into the night air. Even after the moment had quietly passed.

The forest around them stayed exactly the same — dark, still, and watchful. But something inside each of them had already begun to change.

"…We should go back now," Chen said quietly, his voice low and steady in the darkness.

No one argued with him this time.

They stood up slowly, one by one.

Kai stretched his arms high above his head, nearly losing his balance again for a second. "I'm good," he said quickly, steadying himself.

No one had even asked.

Rui brushed the dirt off his hands, still wearing a faint, lingering smile on his face. Dev exhaled deeply and rubbed the back of his neck, trying to shake off the warmth that still lingered.

Chen started walking first, just like he had done on the way out.

This time, the others followed without thinking twice.

The path back to the camp felt different now. Not because the trail itself had changed — but because they had.

No one talked much on the way back. Not like the chaotic energy they had shared earlier.

The leaves still crunched under their steps. The night air still carried that same cool, sharp edge against their skin. But the noise no longer felt as loud or intrusive as before.

Kai was quieter now. He was still moving a little off balance, but the chaos had softened into something gentler.

Rui walked beside Dev, occasionally glancing at him as if he wanted to say something — then deciding against it at the last moment.

Chen stayed ahead of the group, focused and alert as always. Jian walked a few steps behind him again. Wei moved somewhere in the space between all of them.

The distance between each of them wasn't planned. But it wasn't completely random either.

At one point, Kai slowed down too much, drifting slightly off the invisible path. Jian reached out automatically and caught the edge of his sleeve before he wandered too far.

"Walk straight," Jian said quietly.

Kai blinked at him, surprised by the touch. "…You said that already."

"Then listen this time," Jian replied, his voice calm but firm.

Kai huffed softly under his breath. But he didn't pull his sleeve away.

They kept moving forward through the trees.

The tents slowly came into view between the dark trunks — faint, sleepy lights glowing here and there. They were almost back.

Wei slowed down slightly. Not enough for the others to notice. But Jian did.

He adjusted his own steps without a word. Not calling out to him. Not stopping the group. Just… quietly matching Wei's pace.

For a few steps, they walked side by side. No words passed between them. Only the soft crunch of leaves under their feet, the sound of their breathing, and the quiet space that stretched gently between them.

"…You could've gotten caught," Jian said, his gaze staying fixed forward.

Wei didn't answer right away.

"…You followed me?" he asked after a moment.

A small pause hung in the cool night air.

Jian's eyes remained straight ahead. "…No."

Wei turned his head just enough to look at him for a second. He didn't push the question any further.

"…You still came back," Jian added quietly.

Wei's eyes dropped slightly toward the ground. "…I said five minutes."

"That's not what I meant," Jian replied, his voice softer now.

Silence settled between them again.

They kept walking.

The tents were much closer now. Faint voices could be heard drifting from somewhere in the distance once more.

Wei slowed down just a little more. Jian matched his pace again. Not enough to fall behind the rest of the group. But enough to step slightly outside it.

"…You didn't have to go that far," Jian said, almost under his breath.

Wei's fingers brushed lightly against Jian's sleeve as they walked. Not quite holding. Just… there.

"…I know," Wei answered softly.

A pause stretched between them.

Then —

"…But I wanted to."

Jian didn't respond with words. But something small and quiet shifted in the space between them.

They finally reached their tent.

Chen stopped at the entrance and turned slightly toward the others.

"…Act normal," he reminded them.

Kai snorted softly. "I am normal."

"No," Rui said with a tired smile. "You're really not."

"Rude," Kai muttered.

Dev pushed the tent flap open.

Warm air greeted them again — familiar and contained.

They stepped inside one by one.

The lantern was still burning low, exactly where they had left it. It looked as if nothing had changed at all.

But something had.

Jian moved to his usual place and lay down. He rested one arm over his eyes once more.

Wei settled not far from him. The same distance as before. Close enough. But not touching.

The others followed more slowly this time. There was less energy left in them now. More quiet settled over the group.

No one spoke.

Not because they had nothing left to say. But because — for once — it didn't feel necessary to fill the silence.

Outside, the forest continued its steady, unchanging rhythm.

Inside the tent — something had quietly shifted between them.

And neither Jian nor Wei said it out loud.
