Chapter 126 - Episode 124: The Night / What Was Never Said Out Loud

The tent had gone completely quiet.

It did not happen all at once. Instead, the silence came slowly, piece by piece.

Voices faded away one after another. Movement inside the tent gradually settled down. Breaths slowly evened out into the steady rhythm of sleep.

Someone shifted quietly in their sleeping bag. Kai muttered something incoherent and sleepy under his breath. Rui turned over onto his other side. Dev let out a long, tired exhale.

Wei remained perfectly still.

Jian was the only one still awake.

He lay flat on his back with one arm resting over his eyes. Sleep refused to come to him no matter how hard he tried.

The warmth inside his body had not faded yet. It was not only because of the alcohol they had shared earlier. It was not only because of everything that had happened during the night.

He exhaled slowly and quietly.

Then he sat up.

He moved with great care. He made sure not to wake anyone around him.

For a second, his gaze drifted across the dim space inside the tent.

It landed on Wei.

Wei was still lying there quietly. He was facing slightly away from the rest of the group.

Jian looked at him for a moment longer than necessary. Then he forced himself to look away.

He slipped out of the tent without making any sound.

The night greeted him once again.

The air felt cool against his skin. Everything around him was quiet.

The forest had finally settled into a deep, peaceful stillness. There were no voices left in the camp. Only the gentle wind moved lightly through the leaves.

Jian stepped a little further away from the tent. He did not go far. He just needed enough space to breathe.

He stood there with his hands tucked into his pockets. He looked at nothing in particular.

Time passed slowly.

It was not very long.

Then the soft sound of the tent zipper broke the silence behind him.

Jian did not turn around immediately.

Footsteps approached from behind. They were slow and measured.

"…Couldn't sleep?" Chen's voice came, low and calm in the darkness.

Jian exhaled once, still looking straight ahead.

"…No."

Chen came to stand beside him. He stood not too close. He stood not too distant either.

For a moment, neither of them said anything.

The night filled the empty space between them with its quiet presence.

Chen glanced at him once. Then he looked forward again.

"…You don't like me," he said.

It was not really a question.

Jian let out a quiet breath.

"…No."

The answer was simple and direct.

Chen nodded once. It looked like he had already expected that reply.

"…Because of Wei?"

Jian did not answer right away.

Chen did not push him immediately.

"…We've known each other for a long time," he said instead.

Jian's jaw shifted slightly.

"…I know."

Chen turned to look at him now.

"…Then you also know that I don't interfere without a reason."

A long pause stretched between them.

Jian's gaze stayed fixed forward.

"…Then say it."

Chen exhaled slowly. He was not frustrated. He was simply steady.

"…Are you serious?"

The question landed quietly in the dark night air.

Jian did not react right away.

Chen continued speaking, his voice remaining even.

"…Or is this just another phase?"

Silence settled over them.

The wind moved through the trees again.

"…You don't get to ask that," Jian said finally.

Chen's expression did not change at all.

"…I do."

A beat passed.

"…Because I was there," Chen added quietly.

Jian's eyes shifted just slightly.

"…When you weren't."

Those words stayed in the air for a second longer than was comfortable.

Jian looked away.

"…You think I don't know what I did?"

Chen did not answer that directly.

"…I'm asking what you're doing now."

Jian let out a slow breath.

"…What does it look like?"

Chen's voice stayed calm and measured.

"…Unclear."

Another pause followed.

"…You broke it once," Chen said.

He did not speak harshly. He did not raise his voice. He simply stated it as a fact.

"…So I'm asking if you plan to do it again."

Jian's fingers curled slightly inside his pocket.

"…I didn't—"

He stopped suddenly. The words did not finish.

Chen watched him carefully.

"…You chose to," he said quietly.

Jian's gaze snapped toward him.

"…Don't say it like that."

"…Then say it yourself."

Silence fell again.

The night pressed closer around them.

Jian looked away once more.

"…Things were different back then," he said.

Chen did not respond.

"…We were different."

"That doesn't answer anything."

Jian exhaled, sharper this time.

"…You think I don't see it now?"

Chen's voice softened slightly. It was not gentle, but it was less sharp.

"…Seeing it now doesn't change what happened."

A pause stretched between them.

"…It changes what happens next," Jian replied.

Chen held his gaze for a second.

"…That's what I'm asking."

Silence returned again.

This time it was longer.

Jian did not answer.

Because the answer was not simple. Because it was not just one thing.

Chen looked at him.

He was not judging. He was not being soft. He was simply waiting.

"…You're closer to him again," Chen said.

Jian did not deny it.

"…And he's letting you."

That statement landed quieter than the others. But it went much deeper.

Jian's expression shifted slightly.

"…Don't mistake that," Chen added.

Jian's voice lowered.

"…I'm not."

Chen studied him for a moment.

"…Then what are you doing?"

The question stayed hanging in the air.

There was no sarcasm in it. There was no edge. It was just real.

Jian did not answer.

Because he could not. Not yet.

The wind moved through the leaves again.

The tent behind them stayed completely quiet.

Inside the tent, Wei was still asleep. Or perhaps he was only pretending to be.

Outside in the darkness, two people stood facing the night. One was asking difficult questions. One was not ready to give clear answers.

And somewhere between them, everything that had happened before still had not been said out loud.
