The garden had fully woken up by now. Sunlight filtered cleanly through the tall bamboo stalks, no longer as soft as it had been in the morning but still gentle enough not to feel harsh.
Students had spread out across the entire area. Some dragged their bags into the inn, claiming beds and arguing lightly over space while dropping things carelessly around them.
Others wandered along the stone paths, leaning over small bridges, taking photos, or simply doing nothing in particular. The six of them didn't go inside the inn immediately.
Kai had somehow found ice for everyone. No one asked him how he managed it.
"Best decision of the day," he declared as he handed the ice out to the group. Rui took his without any question.
Dev nodded once in quiet approval. Chen accepted his quietly without a word.
Wei hesitated for half a second before taking it. Jian was the last one.
Kai tossed one toward him with a grin. "Don't say I never do anything for you."
Jian caught it easily in one hand. "…you don't."
"Rude." They settled near a low wooden railing, not sitting properly but just leaning there, half-standing and half-resting.
For a while, no one spoke at all. The only sounds were wrappers opening, followed by quiet bites.
Then Kai's gaze suddenly shifted past them. "…oh."
Rui followed his line of sight. "…that's her, right?"
Jian didn't turn immediately to look. Kai didn't wait for anyone else.
"Yanyan." The name landed lightly in the air, but it was not empty.
Jian finally looked across the garden. A small group stood near one of the shaded paths, laughing and talking together.
And there was Yanyan, not alone. She stood close to a boy from Class B who looked neat and composed, the type everyone knew as top of his class.
She was smiling, easy and comfortable. Kai let out a low whistle under his breath.
"…that was fast." No one laughed at the comment.
Rui spoke instead in a calm tone. "…they were already talking before, I think."
Dev nodded slightly in agreement. "Yeah."
Silence settled over the group for a moment. Jian looked for a second longer, then looked away.
It was not sharp or forced, just quietly done. Kai glanced at him, clearly waiting for some kind of reaction.
A comment, anything at all. "…you okay?" he asked carefully.
Jian took another slow bite of his ice. "Yeah."
It sounded simple and flat, almost too normal. Kai narrowed his eyes slightly, like he didn't fully believe it.
Chen spoke before Kai could push any further. "She's from a rich family."
The group shifted their attention toward him. Chen leaned back slightly against the railing as he continued.
"Top tier," he added. "Among the girls in our grade."
Kai blinked in surprise. "…seriously?"
Chen nodded once. "Her father owns multiple businesses."
A small pause followed. "Connections too."
Rui let out a soft "oh" in understanding. Dev glanced again toward her group.
"…makes sense." Kai clicked his tongue lightly.
"So she downgraded from rich to… what?" He gestured vaguely toward Jian.
"…me," Jian said simply. Kai snorted at the reply.
"Yeah. Tragic." A few quiet laughs rose from the group.
The tension didn't grow any heavier. It just shifted quietly between them.
Wei hadn't said anything throughout the conversation. But his gaze had moved once, not directly at Yanyan but toward Jian for just a second.
Jian didn't notice it. Or maybe he did.
"…they look close," Rui said casually. "People move on," Dev added in the same tone.
Chen didn't comment on it at all. Kai looked between Jian and the distant group again, then shook his head slightly.
"…weird.""Not really," Jian said, his tone unchanged.
"I broke up with her." A small pause hung in the air.
"She can do whatever she wants." That should have been the end of it.
And it was, at least on the surface. But Wei's fingers tightened slightly around his ice stick, not enough for anyone to notice but just enough to exist.
The bamboo shifted softly in the wind around them. Students' voices echoed lightly throughout the garden.
Somewhere nearby, someone laughed too loudly. Life kept moving forward without pause.
Kai finished his ice first and pushed off the railing. "Alright," he said.
"What's the plan? Walk? Sit? Exist peacefully like the teacher said?""Try not talking," Rui suggested again.
"Impossible." Dev shook his head with a small smile.
Chen stepped forward slightly with quiet confidence. "We'll walk."
It wasn't really a suggestion. The others followed without argument.
Jian moved along with them. Wei moved too and fell into step beside him.
It wasn't planned or arranged at all. They were simply together.
Behind them, Yanyan's laughter carried once through the bamboo. Jian didn't turn around this time.
And no one asked him to.
Bamboo Garden — Evening Shift
The garden changed without anyone announcing it. Afternoon didn't suddenly end; it simply softened around the edges.
The light turned warmer and gentler. Shadows stretched longer across the ground while voices grew noticeably quieter.
Students slowly drifted back toward the inn. Some carried small snacks, others continued talking in low tones, and a few already looked tired from the day.
The six of them returned together. Not all at once, but close enough that it felt natural.
Kai dropped heavily onto the wooden steps. "I'm not moving."
"You walked for two hours," Rui said. "Exactly."
Dev sat down quietly beside him. Chen stayed standing for a moment before leaning lightly against a nearby pillar.
Wei stepped into the courtyard first. He paused just slightly, as if taking in the quiet space around him.
Jian came a second later. He wasn't right beside him, but he wasn't far either; he was simply there.
Dinner wasn't loud like it usually was at school. It wasn't like before either.
Students sat in their groups, but something had clearly shifted. There was less performance and more real, quiet connection.
Their group didn't split apart at all. Bowls passed naturally from hand to hand and food was shared without hesitation.
No one asked "can I" before taking something. They simply did it.
At some point during the meal, Kai started talking again. Half nonsense and half story, as usual.
Rui argued back lightly. Dev added quiet comments here and there.
Chen responded only when it was truly needed. Wei listened without interrupting.
Jian spoke more than he had before. Not a lot, but noticeably more.
No one pointed it out or made it a big deal. After dinner, the courtyard gradually dimmed.
Lanterns were lit one by one around them. Soft yellow light settled gently into the wood and the surrounding quiet.
Some students went inside to rest. Some chose to stay out a little longer.
Their group stayed right there. They weren't talking much anymore, just sitting together peacefully.
A breeze moved softly through the bamboo. It felt constant and calming.
Kai leaned back on his hands with a relaxed sigh. "…this is kinda nice."
No one disagreed with him. Chen glanced once in his direction, then looked away without comment.
Wei sat near the edge of the steps. His hands rested loosely in his lap.
Jian sat down beside him. He was closer than before, not touching but no longer leaving any obvious space between them.
For a while, no one spoke at all. Then Wei said quietly into the calm air.
"…we used to sit like this." No one asked what he meant by it.
Jian was the one who did. "…when?"
Wei didn't look at him when he answered. "Before."
That was all he said. But it was enough.
Jian didn't reply right away. He didn't need to, because he remembered.
Not clearly or fully, but enough. Enough that he didn't say "I don't."
The bamboo shifted gently again in the breeze. Kai yawned loudly, completely ruining the quiet moment.
"…okay I'm sleeping.""Finally," Rui said.
They started getting up one by one. Wei stood first.
Jian stood right after him. For a second, they were close enough that if either of them had moved just a little.
But neither did. Not yet.
They went inside together with the others. The night settled peacefully around the garden.
And somewhere between yesterday and tomorrow. Something had already begun to return.
Not fully and not clearly. But no longer lost.
