Morning didn't arrive all at once. It slipped in quietly through the thin paper windows and the narrow gaps in the wooden frames, settling in soft lines across the floor.
The room remained still and peaceful. Blankets lay uneven, bags were pushed into corners, and shoes were scattered without any order.
Someone shifted slightly under the covers. A quiet rustle of fabric broke the silence for a moment, then everything fell still again.
Chen was the first to wake. He didn't wake suddenly, just became aware with his eyes open and steady, as if he hadn't been fully asleep to begin with.
He didn't move right away. He simply listened to the different rhythms of breathing around him.
Kai breathed heavily and carelessly, one arm thrown out across the floor. Rui was curled up slightly with the blanket pulled too high over his head.
Dev lay completely still and controlled, almost disciplined even in sleep. Wei remained quiet, his presence calm and steady.
Chen's gaze paused there for a second. Then he looked away without a word.
He sat up slowly, making almost no noise. Across the room, Jian was already awake.
He wasn't sitting up yet. He remained lying down with his eyes open, not staring at the ceiling but looking sideways toward Wei.
Wei hadn't moved yet. His face was turned slightly toward the wall, hair falling loosely across his forehead, breathing slow and even.
Jian didn't shift away this time. He just watched quietly, not intensely or searching, simply noticing.
He noticed the way Wei's hand rested near the edge of the blanket. He noticed the gentle rise of his shoulder with each breath and the peaceful stillness around him.
It felt familiar, not in clear memory but in feeling. Jian blinked once, then looked away and sat up.
The floor felt cold beneath him. He reached for his bag quietly, but the zipper caught slightly, creating a soft sound in the quiet room.
Wei moved in response. He wasn't fully awake yet, just becoming aware as his eyes opened slowly.
For a second they didn't focus. Then they did, landing gently on Jian with simple recognition.
There was no surprise or reaction, just quiet acknowledgment. Jian paused for a moment, not because of the look, but simply because.
"…morning." It wasn't loud, barely above a breath.
Wei nodded once in reply. "…morning."
That was all they said. No follow-up came.
Jian reached into his bag and pulled out a small towel. He hesitated for half a second, then placed it gently beside Wei.
He didn't hand it over directly or offer it with words. He simply left it there.
Wei looked at the towel, then at Jian. "…thanks."
Jian nodded once without any explanation. Chen watched the quiet exchange from across the room but didn't say anything.
Behind them, Kai groaned loudly. "Why is morning so early…"
Rui pulled the blanket completely over his head. "Go back to sleep."
"We have teachers," Dev said quietly. Kai groaned again in protest.
The room began to wake slowly. Not all at once and not loudly, just with small movements like blankets shifting, someone sitting up, and someone searching for something dropped the night before.
Wei sat up and ran a hand through his hair. Jian stood and moved toward the door.
Then he paused, not turning fully around. Just enough to speak softly.
"Water's outside." Wei nodded in response.
A second later, he stood up too. They didn't walk together on purpose, but when they stepped outside they ended up side by side.
It wasn't planned at all. It simply felt natural.
The morning air felt cool and refreshing. Bamboo moved softly in the distance with a gentle rustle.
Students were already outside. Some brushed their teeth near the water tap while others sat half-asleep on the steps.
Jian leaned slightly forward and splashed cool water onto his face. Wei stood beside him, waiting his turn without any rush.
Jian stepped aside when he finished. Wei moved in smoothly to take his place.
The space exchanged easily between them. It felt simple and natural, with no words needed.
From a distance, it didn't look like anything special. Just two people using the same water tap at the same time.
But they didn't hesitate anymore. Not even for a moment.
And somewhere in that quiet exchange. Something gentle had settled back into place.
Not something entirely new. Just something quietly returning.
