Chapter 135 - Episode 132: Bamboo Exploration — Light Drift

They didn't plan to explore the area at all. It simply happened without any discussion or decision.

One of them stepped onto a quiet side path first. Then another followed naturally, and the rest saw no reason to go anywhere else.

Just like that, they were walking together again through the bamboo. The bamboo felt different in the morning light, brighter and less hushed than before.

Soft light fell in thin, shifting lines across the path. It moved gently whenever the wind stirred the leaves overhead.

Kai walked ahead of everyone, as usual. "Okay," he said while turning around and walking backward.

"Rule number one—if you get lost, that's on you.""You're the one who'll get lost," Rui replied without missing a beat.

"Excuse me, I have excellent direction sense.""You walked into the girls' dorm last year."

"That was a strategic error." Dev snorted quietly at the exchange.

Chen walked a few steps behind the group. He wasn't leading them, but he wasn't exactly following either; he was simply present in his calm way.

Wei stayed near the side of the path. He wasn't far from the others and he wasn't separate, just slightly outside the center of the group.

Jian noticed this gradually as they walked. He saw the way Wei didn't interrupt any conversations but listened carefully instead.

He noticed how Wei quietly adjusted his pace to match whoever was closest at the moment. He saw how Wei didn't try too hard to fit in, but he also didn't leave the group behind.

Kai suddenly stopped in the middle of the path. "Photo."

He offered no further explanation. He grabbed Rui's arm and pulled him toward a narrow wooden bridge.

"Stand there.""I'm not posing."

"You are now." Dev stepped aside automatically, already used to Kai's sudden ideas.

Chen didn't move at all. Wei hesitated for just a second, then stepped a little closer.

He didn't move into the center of the frame. He simply positioned himself near the others.

Jian watched the moment unfold quietly. Kai squinted dramatically as he looked through the camera.

"No, no—this is ugly. Rearrange.""You're ugly," Rui shot back.

"Valid, but irrelevant." Kai pointed toward Wei with a small gesture.

"You—move slightly here." Wei blinked in mild surprise.

"…why me?""Because you look like you belong in aesthetic photos."

A short pause followed. Rui snorted softly in agreement.

"Fair." Wei didn't argue with the suggestion.

He simply moved one small step. Now he was no longer standing at the edge.

He had become part of the group in the frame. Jian noticed that change too.

Kai then reached out and grabbed Jian's sleeve lightly. "You too. Don't stand like a background character."

"I am a background character.""Not today."

Jian didn't resist the gentle pull. He stepped into the group without complaint.

The six of them tightened their positions just a little. They weren't touching, but they stood noticeably closer than they had before.

"Okay," Kai said as he raised the camera again. "Look normal."

"No one here is normal," Dev muttered under his breath. The camera clicked once, then again, and then once more because Kai never trusted the first shot.

"Done." They didn't rush away from the bridge right away.

They stayed there for a second longer, letting the moment settle. Then they continued walking along the curving path.

At some point Rui found a thin stick and began drawing random lines in the soft dirt. Dev pointed out an interesting fact about the structure of the bamboo, something no one had asked for.

Kai interrupted him halfway through the explanation. Chen corrected Kai once with a calm remark.

Kai didn't argue back immediately this time. That small change felt new and noticeable.

Wei spoke only once during the walk. He pointed slightly ahead with a quiet gesture.

"…there's another path." Everyone looked in that direction and followed without any discussion.

No one questioned the suggestion. It simply felt natural to go together.

Jian walked beside Wei this time. He wasn't behind him or after him; he walked right beside him.

For a few steps they didn't speak at all. Then Kai's voice echoed from ahead with sudden energy.

"Whoever reaches that pavilion last is buying snacks.""That wasn't agreed—"

It was already too late. Kai had started running down the path.

Rui followed right behind him with a laugh. Dev sighed but went after them anyway.

Chen walked faster without actually running. Wei didn't move immediately.

Jian glanced over at him. "…you're not going?"

Wei looked ahead toward the others, then back at Jian. "…I will."

A brief pause hung between them. Then Wei began to move forward.

He wasn't rushing, but he wasn't holding back either. Jian followed at an easy pace, not chasing but simply keeping up.

The bamboo blurred slightly as they moved along the path. Light broke through the leaves, shifting and reforming with every step.

Ahead, Kai shouted something unintelligible in excitement. Rui yelled back at him playfully.

Dev complained loudly about the sudden race. Chen said nothing at all.

For the first time in a while, Wei smiled. It wasn't a wide or obvious smile, but it was clearly there.

Jian saw it clearly. And this time he didn't look away.

Because something had changed between them. It hadn't happened suddenly or loudly.

But it had changed enough. Wei no longer felt like someone simply standing beside them.

He felt like he had always belonged there with the group.
