The weekend flew by so fast.
One minute I was having fun, next I'm standing in front of my mirror looking homeless with my nest of hair.
It's time to buy a bonnet honestly.
When I was done, I headed straight downstairs but mum and dad were not in sight.
I checked the kitchen but it was empty.
I ran back to their room but neither were they there.
Where could they possibly have gone?
And worse, no notes were left.
Weird.
"Mum!?.." I called out in the empty house and got no answer.
"Dad!?"
No response.
Something was definitely wrong.
I felt goosebumps all over my skin as fear creeped in.
This wasn't how I planned my weekday to begin with.
There was a sudden tension shift in the air that felt suffocating.
I quickly grabbed my phone from the counter and dialed mum's number.
'Hello, the number you call is switched off. You can–'
At this point my heart was thumping hard against my chest as I tried dialing dad's number.
But it was the same fate.
My breathing started coming out in gasps as I got a slight pain in my chest.
This can't be happening.
I really hope it's not what I think it is.
Maybe I'm just overwhelmed. I'll just go to school and come back, then everything will go back to normal.
***
"Maybe they had somewhere important to go and forgot to inform you."
"Forgot!? That word isn't even in my mum's dictionary!"
Me and Samantha were in the school cafeteria.
I came right to school and confided in her. Her suggestion might be reasonable, but my mum and the word forgot can never be in the same sentence.
Even if dad does forget sometimes, mum? – never.
"Don't think much about it Fey, they might be home right now ready to explain this." She suggested again.
I took a deep breath in, exhaling out my exhaustion.
Maybe she's right.
Maybe I'm just overthinking all these.
Kinda.
"I guess." I continued tossing with my food.
"Don't worry, I will take permission and escort you back to your house and see where I may help out and see what might have happened."
Nodding, I stood up and left the cafeteria with a worried Samantha behind.
I just wanted today to be over with already.
**
"Class that would be all for today. The project will be submitted next Monday."
Professor Andrus announced to the class and left.
While everyone was packing up, I'd already rushed out of the class.
I tried calling dad but it wasn't reachable neither was mum's. Even Samantha tried too but ended up the same fate as I .
"Freya, I'm really worried about all this. Can I escort you? – I can take permission from the dean." She offered.
"Don't worry yourself, it might as well be a misunderstanding." I reassured her.
She's been offering help in the best way she could but I can't let her get into trouble because of me.
With that I bid her goodbye and sprinted back home.
That was clearly a bad choice, cause I've been panting for a while now.
It felt like my heart was being suffocated by my ribcage.
The house looked more quiet than usual. The weather had changed from the once sunny to the now gloomy weather.
I walked into the house – there was no change.
Everywhere was silent, like nobody lived here.
Not being over reactive, I freshened up and made myself comfortable.
Samantha might be right, maybe I was really over reacting.
I took some snacks and went back to my room.
I got a notification from my phone
Sammy:
'You home yet'
Me:Yeah.
Sammy:
Are they around yet?
Me:
Nope.
Sammy:
Okay, remember not to overreact and just enjoy your day, they will surely come back later.
Me
Sure.
Sammy:
I'll chat with you later, bye :)
I switched off my phone after that.
My eyelids felt so heavy and my body arches from all sides.
I needed a lot of sleep at this point.
I couldn't hold back the sleep and just dozed off.
***
A loud sound jolted me up from sleep.
What time is it?
I looked around my room and saw nothing.
It must have been from downstairs.
With staggering feet, I scrambled downstairs, slowly heading to where the sound came from.
I peeped into the kitchen where the sound came from.
There was nothing.
Weird.
I could swear I heard a sound just a few minutes ago.
I walked towards the sink and peeped out the window, same thing – Nothing.
I huffed out a large breath, wiping out the sweat on my forehead as I relaxed.
I was just overreacting.
"From what?"
"Aah!!"
I twisted my body so far immediately I felt a hand on my shoulder. I never knew I could turn so fast in my life.
The person in front of me almost brought me to tears.
"Dad!"
I hugged him, my years streaming down my face.
I didn't care if I messed up his shirt, all that mattered was he was here now, with me.
"I'm so sorry princess, your mum and I had something important we had to do." He spoke with a heavy tune in his voice.
"Where's mum?"
I asked looking behind him as I released the hug.
"She'll be here in a minute, she needs to grab something from the car." He replied.
I was just so happy they were back. Later I would text Samantha and tell her everything.
I headed to the living room and sat on the couch waiting for mum to walk in.
Dad headed upstairs as I waited.
I can't remember how many minutes had passed before the door opened.
"Mom!!"
I rushed to hug her as she did the same.
"Oh my baby, how I missed you." She spoke, kissing my forehead over and over.
I just wanted to stay in her embrace forever.
"How are you sweetie, we're so sorry for not calling." She hugged me tighter before releasing the hug.
Oh how wonderful it is to finally feel like home with both parents around.
"It's okay." I said not really in the mood to start asking questions.
After, she headed upstairs and I still sat where I was.
I didn't ask questions, doesn't mean I didn't have any to ask.
Once they come downstairs, I'll be on their neck.
With that thought I laid on the couch with my gaze on the ceiling.
Just watching.
Just waiting.
