Light moved differently here. The windows were higher, the ceilings lower, the overlap of city light and interior light created a kind of middle tone, a warm grey that didn't glare or hide, just sat in the room like a presence. Sela stood in the middle of the common area for a moment after they'd finished the first security sweep, her hands at her sides, her eyes moving slowly from one corner to the next, as if she were seeing space differently than she had been seeing it for six years, the geometry of walls and doors and windows registering as something new rather than as constraints.
