She knows Kai will die. She tells him it's okay.
I find him at the edge of the camp in the hour after the messenger arrived with the divine fire scars on his face.
Not difficult to find. The specific quality of someone who has been doing everything that needs doing before the ending arrives, running through the list with the efficiency of someone who is working from a real list rather than a vague sense of incompleteness, tends to produce a specific positioning — the person ends up at the edge of things rather than the center of them, the place where the work is visible and the interruptions are minimal.
He's at the equipment position.
Not the main one — the secondary one, the position that exists slightly away from the group's central space because some work requires the kind of focus that proximity to other people's ongoing crises doesn't permit.
He looks up when I arrive.
