Fred observed Sonia's condition with total dismay. His heart pounded heavily against his chest, and every sound from the machines surrounding her only intensified the anxiety gnawing at him.
From every indicator flashing across the monitors, the truth was becoming painfully clear. They were losing Sonia, and the situation had reached the point where drastic measures were their only option.
Her survival and death at this point were hanging in the balance, and with a slight tilt to the wrong side, she would be gone for good.
Without giving much thought, Fred issued a few instructions. "Start another line," he told one of the doctors.
Then he glanced at another doctor, noting his steady hand. "Prepare epinephrine."
The nurses moved immediately to make the preparations. Everyone was racing against time, and with every passing second, Sonia's condition continued to deteriorate.
