I stepped out of the car into the fresh mainland air—as fresh as fuel and chemically saturated air could be— glad to finally get away from the sleazy driver who wouldn't stop looking at me through his rearview mirror.
Had he noticed?
I tried to be bold today and not put on any makeup. Even my eye mask was a no-show. I wore a simple blue sweater—as sweaters had lately become my go-to outfit— and a white pair of loose trousers. A pair of black boots to go with that.
Was I being too bold?
As I pondered over that question, I caught the gaze of a woman.
She quickly turned to the side when she saw that I had seen her.
My heart skipped a beat as a dreadful sense of déjà vu washed over me.
My eyes darted to the side. Someone else was watching me! A middle-aged man.
A boy on a bike slowed to a stop, his eyes on me the whole time.
I tried to take a step back, and that was when I noticed a group of people following my movement.
