Chapter 181 - Chapter 180  -  The True Ability of the State of Fearlessness

"I'm going to take back what Rangiku lost."

When Gin's flashback ended with those words, a heavy silence seemed to pass through the screen. In that single instant, every viewer understood why he had gone so far. It was not ambition. It was not loyalty. It was not a hunger for power. Everything, from his false smile to his final carefully hidden betrayal, had been for one person alone.

Then the scene shifted.

Elsewhere, Ichigo Kurosaki, Rangiku - still recovering - and the others were preparing to cross through the special gate developed by Kisuke Urahara, an unstable and dangerous passage that would take them directly to the battlefield in the Soul King's Palace.

"Gin…"

Rangiku still did not know the whole truth. Her lips were pressed tightly together, as if any word that escaped them might make her collapse. All she could feel was unease, fear without a name, that cruel intuition that comes before irreversible loss. And in that moment, the sudden reversal caused by Gin made every viewer's breathing grow unconsciously tense.

They had already thought that Retsu Unohana, the first captain of the Eleventh Division, had hidden enough depth to completely change the perception of the story. But now Gin had appeared, revealing himself at the very end as an even heavier piece on the board, a narrative bomb buried since the beginning and only detonated on the verge of the finale.

In the original story, even by the end of the decisive battle arc, it had never been truly clear what Rangiku had lost. Only after the concept of the Soul King became more complete was that missing piece finally patched into place. When Alex wrote the script, he simply chose to bring that connection forward and let the truth come from Gin's own mouth.

And looking back over Gin's entire life, every step, every slanted smile, every crime, and every choice seemed to point in the same direction.

Rangiku.

From the Soul Society's perspective, following Sosuke Aizen was an unforgivable betrayal. Gin had stained his own name, abandoned his oaths, and become a criminal in everyone's eyes. But no one could deny the overwhelming power of his motive.

"If you're not with me, what's the point of winning the world?"

That kind of quiet, tragic, obsessive devotion was pure poison to the hearts of the fans. Comments began flooding across the screen one after another, calling Gin "a demon on the surface, tenderness underneath," saying that "behind those narrowed eyes was a sincerity too pure for this world," or simply declaring, "Gin is a real man."

At the very least, his pain felt far more human than that of a certain masked traitor from another work, the kind of character who committed atrocities and still expected the audience to understand him.

"Hmm…"

Far away in the United States, Alex thought of that very character while connecting him to Gin, and his headache returned.

After all, Bleach was already approaching its ending, and the second half of Death Note was also in production. It was about time to prepare the next major project.

Naruto was an essential piece in the construction of his entertainment empire. The problem was a certain red-eyed genius, the most troublesome "dutiful son" in that entire universe. How could he handle him without destroying the emotional logic of the story? How could he adapt his actions without turning the drama into absurdity?

The thought continued to bother Alex for a few seconds.

But the screen had already returned to the battlefield.

Struck by Kamishini no Yari, Sosuke Aizen staggered and brought one hand to his chest. For the first time in a long while, his face showed real pain, twisted and almost human.

"Heh… I've always known, Gin. From the very beginning, I knew you stayed by my side because you were waiting for a chance to kill me. What always made me curious was the method you would choose. That is why, even after sensing your intentions, I turned a blind eye."

Although pain marked his expression, Aizen smiled in the next instant. Slowly, he raised his eyes toward Gin.

"You didn't truly think something of this level would be enough to kill me, did you, Gin?"

Gin's expression froze for a fraction of a second. Then he lowered his gaze slightly, as if even that reaction had already been part of his calculations.

"Captain Aizen… I once told you about my Bankai's ability, didn't I?"

His voice remained soft, almost gentle. Yet there was a coldness in it that made the skin crawl.

"I'm sorry. I lied."

Gin raised his Zanpakuto, and the fingertips of his left hand touched the blade with a strange delicacy.

"Kamishini no Yari does not extend as far as I claimed. It is not that fast either. Its true ability lies in…"

He slid his finger along the blade and stopped at a nearly invisible point.

"Do you see this? There is a small gap here."

The camera followed the movement of his finger, closing in on the sword. The viewers could clearly see a tiny notch, no larger than a sesame seed.

"The true ability of Kamishini no Yari is to leave a lethal poison inside the target at the exact moment it pierces them."

The moment Gin finished speaking, a silver light began to glow inside Aizen's chest, precisely where the blade had pierced him.

For the first time, surprise flashed through Sosuke Aizen's eyes.

Gin lowered his voice and once again chanted the release phrase of his Bankai.

"Shoot him dead, Kamishini no Yari."

The poison spread through Aizen's body all at once. At the very instant the phrase ended, it exploded from within.

Aizen's flesh and spiritual pressure, once wrapped in an almost dreamlike color, were brutally torn apart. A massive hole opened in his body, as if that arrogant, untouchable existence had finally been dragged down from its pedestal.

Gin reached toward the cavity torn open in his chest.

"Now… give me back Rangiku's soul."

But then that voice sounded again.

The same calm voice. The same elegant provocation. The same unbearable superiority.

"Was that all, Gin?"

Gin's pupils contracted violently. He looked forward.

Sosuke Aizen was standing there.

Whole.

Unblemished.

The body that had just been destroyed by Kamishini no Yari stood before him without a single wound. There was no hole in his chest. Even the original puncture left by the blade had disappeared without a trace. It was as though none of it had ever happened.

Schlik!

In the next instant, a short blade pierced Gin's abdomen from behind.

Many sharp-eyed viewers recognized that weapon immediately. It was Harribel's sword.

"You…?!"

When Gin realized that Harribel was behind him - the same Harribel everyone believed had died beneath Rukia's white execution - his entire world seemed to collapse for a second. Even the mask he had cultivated for decades appeared to crack.

Aizen merely lifted his hand with casual ease.

The slash of energy released by that calm gesture opened a gigantic wound across Gin's body, tearing him for more than a meter.

It almost cut him in half.

Gin's body was thrown out from the inner hall of the Soul King's Palace and fell toward the entrance stairs below.

"I thought it would be a more troublesome ability. How disappointing."

Aizen looked down at him from above, contempt filling his eyes.

"Even so, since you forced me to use the ability of the State of Fearlessness, I should grant you one final word of praise, Gin."

It was at that exact moment that Ichigo, Rangiku, and the others crossed through Kisuke Urahara's special gate and arrived at the entrance to the Soul King's Palace.

As soon as they stepped onto the stairs, the first thing they saw was Gin falling from the hall above.

"Gin!!!"

Tears burst from Rangiku's eyes. She ran without thinking, without hesitation, without caring about anything else. She stretched out her arms with all the strength she had, trying to reach him, trying to stop his fall, trying to deny what her eyes were already seeing.

But she was too late.

Gin's body struck the floor of the palace's main avenue with a dull, heavy sound.

"No… no… Why…?"

Rangiku dropped beside him and pulled him into her arms, as if she could keep him tied to life through desperation alone.

"Why do you always do this? You always leave without saying anything… always disappear to some place I don't know… always leave me behind…"

Her voice broke into sobs. There was not enough anger to cover the pain. There was no accusation capable of hiding the fear. All that remained was a woman holding someone who had always been too far away, even when he was right beside her.

"I'm… sorry…"

Gin used what remained of his strength to speak. Each word seemed torn from the depths of a body that no longer obeyed him.

"What Rangiku lost… in the end… I still couldn't take it back…"

"Hey! Can you hear me?!"

Ichigo rushed over shortly afterward. He and Gin had never truly fought one-on-one, aside from that first encounter in the Soul Society, when Gin had wounded him while blocking his entry. Because of that, to Ichigo, Gin had always been merely one of Aizen's men. An enigmatic, dangerous enemy who was impossible to read.

But on the way there, he had heard Rangiku speak about Gin. He had heard her suspicions, her pain, and her quiet conviction that Gin had never followed Aizen from the heart.

Ichigo still did not know what to believe. But seeing that man broken before him, so close to death, his impulsive and kind nature took over.

"Hold on! I'll call Orihime right now and - "

"Ichigo… Kurosaki…"

Gin held onto his final breath as if gripping a thread about to snap.

"I… need to tell you something…"

Ichigo immediately leaned closer.

"I discovered… the ability of the State of Fearlessness…"

The moment Gin said that, countless fans watching Bleach felt an intense sense of déjà vu.

A dying man, entrusting the protagonist with the secret of the great villain's ability before his death.

This scene felt far too familiar.
