Chapter 201 - Chapter 200 - Sosuke Aizen Was Never This Low!

Light Yagami's scheme did not end there.

Before giving up ownership of the notebook, he had already made Ryuk write two false rules into it.

The first stated that whoever wrote a name in the notebook would die if they failed to write another name within thirteen days.

The second stated that if the notebook was destroyed or burned, everyone who had ever touched it would die.

The first rule perfectly erased suspicion from Light and Misa. The second forced the police to hesitate, making them afraid to destroy the notebook outright. With that, no one in the task force had any reason left to suspect Light Yagami or Misa Amane. One after another, they demanded that Light's handcuffs be removed and that surveillance on Misa be lifted.

The evidence seemed undeniable. Even L had no choice but to accept reality and unlock Light's handcuffs.

And yet, the very next turn of events made the audience's hearts clench hard.

Following Light's orders, Misa found the second Death Note that had been buried in advance. But because she had previously given up ownership of the notebook, she had also lost the Shinigami Eyes. Even worse, she had forgotten L's real name.

So, without the slightest hesitation, Misa made the eye deal with Ryuk again.

All of it was for one purpose.

To help Light kill L.

At that moment, tens of millions of moviegoers around the world fell silent.

Even many of the viewers who had previously disliked Misa, even those who had mocked her as annoying or foolish, found themselves unable to say anything when they saw how far she was willing to go for Light.

After all, because she had already made the eye deal once before, Misa's remaining lifespan had already been cut in half. And now, she had sacrificed half of that half again.

Just how deeply did she love Light Yagami?

And yet, Light's feelings for her were obviously nothing more than exploitation and cruelty.

"I'm starting to want to punch this protagonist," Jay muttered under his breath.

As a straight man, how could he not feel pity for a girl who was willing to give everything for the person she loved?

Alex smiled inwardly.

He thought to himself that if Jay saw what Light did next, wanting to "punch" him would probably be putting it lightly.

Soon after making the Shinigami Eye deal for the second time, Misa arrived at task force headquarters, hoping to see L's name and help Light kill him. But because she had already been cleared of suspicion and was no longer considered a suspect, she had no way of meeting L directly.

Just when the audience was aching for her, believing that her second sacrifice had been completely wasted, Light once again revealed that chilling, almost demonic smile that seemed to say everything was going exactly according to plan.

At that moment, Rem, who saw through the surveillance feed that Misa's lifespan had been cut in half once again, immediately realized that Misa must have made another eye deal with Ryuk.

Under Light's orders, Misa began using the Death Note outside to kill again.

L, too, was finally forced into a corner. He decided to use the Death Note himself to test whether the rules written inside were true or false.

That was right. Even now, he had still not fully abandoned his suspicion of Light and Misa.

As long as he could prove that the rules recorded in the Death Note were false, he would be able to arrest them both.

And in that instant, Rem finally saw through Light Yagami's true intention.

"So that's what this is… Light Yagami… this man is terrifying."

"He knows with absolute certainty that I will save Misa. Under these circumstances, the only way to protect her is for me to write L's real name in my own Death Note."

"And because I would be using the Death Note to extend Misa's lifespan, I would die as well… two birds with one stone."

Behind Rem, Light's face twisted into a sinister smile that made the blood run cold.

"Well then, what will you do? You may be a shinigami, but you care deeply about Misa. Right now, the only way to save her is for you to write down L's true name and die together with him."

By this point, the audience was no longer merely shocked. Their fists tightened in the dark, and many of them looked as if they wanted to rush into the screen and tear Light Yagami apart with their bare hands.

Too vile.

Too cruel.

Too utterly disgusting.

"Light Yagami is smart, sure, but he's also a complete psychopath."

"He actually used a girl who loved him that much like this? He deserves the worst death imaginable."

"I don't even care about the ending anymore. I just want to know when Light Yagami dies."

"You have to admire Alex's acting, though. Most actors really couldn't perform this kind of twisted insanity."

Around the world, moviegoers clenched their fists.

When they watched Bleach before, their feelings toward Sosuke Aizen had been complicated. There had been admiration, longing, appreciation, even a strange kind of respect. Of course, there had also been hostility, disgust, and condemnation.

But with Light Yagami, there was only negativity.

After all, Sosuke Aizen had never been this low.

Damn it.

Just die already, you piece of trash.

Jay sucked in a deep breath and used every bit of self-control he had to suppress the rage burning in his chest. Otherwise, he genuinely felt he might not be able to stop himself from punching Alex, who was sitting right beside him.

On the screen, as L began preparations to test the Death Note, Rem also understood that if she did not act now, Misa would be arrested.

At that moment, she hesitated no longer.

She took out her own Death Note and wrote down L's true name.

And in that very instant, Rem's own body began to crumble into dust, gradually scattering into nothing.

Elsewhere, L, who had just been preparing to continue the investigation, suddenly went limp like a puppet whose strings had been cut.

With a heavy thud, he fell from his chair to the floor.

"L! What's wrong? L!"

Light rushed forward at once and lifted him into his arms.

In the eyes of the police officers standing nearby, Light looked utterly frantic, as though he were overwhelmed with worry.

But from L's perspective, what he saw was something entirely different.

The corners of Light's mouth were rising uncontrollably, his expression caught between forced restraint and a triumph so intense he could barely suppress it.

L's face first showed shock. A few seconds later, that shock faded into understanding, and finally into quiet acceptance.

Then, slowly, he closed his eyes.

Before death took him, he had finally obtained the truth he had wanted most.

That was enough.

Everything was already in place.

When L's death was confirmed, audiences at premiere screenings in cinemas across the world nearly jumped from their seats.

Dead?

He was really dead?

L had actually died?

Then who could possibly stop that lunatic Light Yagami now?

Even Alex's own fans wanted to rush into the screen and cut that bastard down.

He had been completely twisted beyond recognition.

After L's death, Light solemnly declared that he would take up L's mantle and continue investigating Kira to the very end.

That only made countless viewers even angrier.

Now that bastard was wearing a face that reminded them of Sosuke Aizen, and somehow it made the whole thing feel even more unbearable.

"Damn it! When the hell does this bastard die?"

"I want Light Yagami dead too, but honestly, with the story at this point, it really feels like no one can bring him down."

"Don't rush. There's still time before the movie ends. Maybe there's another twist."

"L is dead! What kind of damn twist could there still be?"

"Don't forget, L's expression before he died was strange. Maybe he left something behind."

Sitting in the cinema, Alex suddenly felt that his own situation had become a little dangerous.

Because the way the people around him were looking at him carried a faint trace of hatred.

Alex was speechless.

Now he finally understood what those actors famous for playing abusive villains must have felt back then.

Sometimes, being too good at acting really was not a good thing.

He even started considering whether, when he went to America for the promotional tour, he should hire a couple more bodyguards.

High salary.

Preferably the kind who could stop bullets.

The second half of Death Note finally reached its final stage.

And just as some viewers had guessed, although L was dead, he had indeed left one last move behind.

He had not told Light, nor had he told anyone in the task force.

Just when Light was secretly preparing to take over as the second L and unfold his plan for a new world, the evidence L had left behind was discovered by the police, led by Light's own father.

Through L's death, they finally obtained irrefutable proof that Light Yagami was Kira.

They lured Light to an abandoned factory in the middle of nowhere and exposed his true identity.

The violent contrast of falling from heaven into hell in a single instant left Light completely frozen.

"Heh… hehe… hehehehe…"

After a long silence, Light lowered his head and chuckled softly. Then the chuckle became laughter. Finally, he threw his head back and laughed wildly toward the sky.

Surrounded by the muzzles of police guns, Light half-turned his head, his face distorted into something almost monstrous, and spoke the words that would be remembered forever.

"That's right. I am Kira."

"I know very well that killing is a crime. But this is the only way to correct the world. This is the mission I was given. Only I can do it…"

At that point, Light crossed his legs, raised both hands high, and shouted the now-iconic line with manic conviction.

"Can anyone else do it?!"

When audiences saw Light's demonic pose and that exaggerated, unhinged expression as he delivered the line, many nearly choked.

Why did Alex always like creating this kind of absurd contrast in the middle of such a serious atmosphere?

It was exactly like the earlier "all according to plan" moment. Ridiculous, unforgettable, and impossible to look away from.

"That's right. The only one who can create a new world… is me."

"No. You're just a murderer."

At that moment, the man pointing a gun at Light was his own biological father, the head of the task force. His expression was solemn, but the grief in his eyes could not be hidden.

"And this notebook is the most evil murder weapon in history."

"You are a serial killer who lost himself to the power of a shinigami and deluded himself into thinking he could become a god."

"That is all you are."

Those lines, which in another version might have belonged to another character, were now spoken by the protagonist's father. Combined with the actor's restrained yet devastating performance, they struck the audience even harder.

It was too painful.

No one watching could remain unmoved.

A police officer who had always believed in justice had finally discovered that the son he had once been so proud of was the very murderer he had been hunting all along.

Bang!

A gunshot rang out.

Unlike the earlier scene where Light and Misa had been taken out of confinement, this time, the bullet was real.

And yet, he still missed.

How could a father truly bring himself to shoot his own son dead?

"Ugh… ah…"

Under the glow of dusk, Light desperately tried to flee.

But before the police could even act, Ryuk's voice suddenly echoed beside his ear.

"I told you before, didn't I? When you die, I'll be the one to write your name in my notebook."

"That's an important promise between the shinigami who brought the notebook to the human world and its owner."

The shot changed.

Ryuk sat alone at the top of the factory chimney. He took out the Death Note and calmly wrote down Light's name. Then, without the slightest emotional fluctuation, he spoke.

"You lost, Light."

The fading sunlight of dusk fell across Light Yagami's body.

Whether he had felt regret in that final instant, no one would ever know.

His father collapsed to his knees before his son's corpse and wept without restraint.

The camera slowly moved across each character in the film.

Light's younger sister was still chatting happily with her classmates about the older brother she was so proud of, completely unaware that Light was already dead.

His mother was still preparing dinner as usual, waiting for her husband and son to come home.

Misa, after crossing the protective railing, stood silently beneath the sinking sun, watching the last light of evening disappear beyond the horizon.

The screen slowly faded to black.

A sorrowful ending song began to play.

The entire theater sank into silence.

Although the film did not explicitly reveal the final fate of every character, the audience could already guess.

Light Yagami and L had destroyed each other.

The Yagami family would inevitably collapse under the weight of Light's death.

And Misa, who had once been willing to offer everything she had to Light, would never choose to live on alone.

In the end, from the very moment that notebook fell into the human world, this had already become a tragedy through and through.

Then, after the ending song finished, the final image appeared.

Under the dark night sky, beneath the pale moonlight, the rookie officer placed the Death Note on the ground.

Then he set it on fire.

Watching the flames rise, the audience, who had only just fallen into silence, was moved all over again.

Perhaps…

This was the best ending after all.
