BONUS CHAPTER: 700PS
--<<>>--
The arena chanted on.
"AKIRA! AKIRA! AKIRA!"
But not everyone shared the enthusiasm.
***
HPSC Headquarters:
Madam President sat in her office, watching the broadcast on a wall-mounted screen, with a grim expression.
She watched the boy walk off the stage with a bleeding fist and a hundred thousand people screaming his name.
She sighed.
"No wonder Nezu used this to defend him."
She picked up her teacup. Took a sip and set it down.
"If we don't control him soon, we'll end up in the same situation as China." She looked at the screen. "And we'll have a loose cannon like Ming or Indra on our hands."
She turned off the screen.
"That boy just turned a hundred thousand civilians into his personal army with a single speech. If we let this continue, he'll be untouchable by the time he graduates."
She stood up, and clicked the office phone.
"Get me a meeting with the board. Now."
***
Unknown location. Japan:
In a dark room. A thing sat on a stool, watching the broadcast on a small TV. He had a strange face, pale skin, and a weird, veiny head with no opening for eyes or nose.
He watched the whole thing.
His smile widened.
"I hope you're not wrong, blood sucker."
He raised the glass to the screen.
"This could be fun."
***
Unknown location. Europe:
In a room with no light, no windows, no lamps. Just pure darkness.
In the centre of the darkness was a throne.
A figure sat on the throne. Just a silhouette so dark it was darker than the room around it.
He was watching. Not on a screen, nor on a broadcast. He was watching through something else entirely.
He could see the boy. The bleeding fist. The crimson eyes. The flaming feather mark on his forehead.
It's finally time.
***
Back to the arena.
The chanting hadn't stopped. If anything, it was getting louder.
"AKIRA! AKIRA! AKIRA!"
Akira walked back to his class. His bleeding hand hung at his side, still dripping. Still unhealed on purpose.
He reached his class 1-A's area and was immediately punched on both shoulders by six different people.
Kirishima slammed his fist into Akira's arm so hard it would have bruised a normal person.
"SUPER MANLY, DUDE!!" Kirishima yelled, his eyes sparkling. "THAT WAS THE MANLIEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!"
Kaminari was right behind him. "Bro, you just told the entire country to go fuck itself on live TV. You're insane."
Sero was grinning. "The blood thing was crazy. Like, actually crazy. Are you okay?"
Mina grabbed his arm and shook it. "MR. BOSS!! THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!! I LITERALLY GOT CHILLS!!"
Tokoyami stepped forward.
"You carry a dark shadow over your heart," Tokoyami said, his voice low and serious. "But instead of being consumed by it, you used it to command the world. That is the mark of a true-"
The class stared at him.
Sato blinked. "Dude, what?"
"I was trying to compliment him."
"Try harder."
Akira laughed. Then he felt a hand slip into his bleeding hand.
Momo didn't say anything. She just held his hand and stood beside him.
He squeezed back.
CRACK!
Midnight's whip cut through the chaos.
"ONE LAST ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR AKIRA SHUZENJI!!" Midnight yelled into her mic.
"YEAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Midnight let it ride for a few seconds. Then she cracked the whip again.
"NOW!" she announced. "A special announcement!!"
The arena began to quiet. The students in the field looked at each other.
"What?"
"Special announcement?"
"There are changes?"
"Oh my god... we're cooked."
Midnight paced across the stage, her heels clicking.
"For this year's Sports Festival," she said, "we thought, 'why not do something differently?'"
The arena and the students listened.
"Normally, we have two preliminary games and then the one-versus-one tournament. An obstacle race, then maybe a cavalry battle, blah blah blah. The same format every year."
She stopped pacing.
"So we thought, 'Meh. Too boring. Let's spice things up.'"
A low hum filled the arena. Not from the crowd. From above.
Everyone looked up.
An army of drones flew in from every entrance of the stadium. Hundreds of them. They moved in a perfect formation, each one carrying a harness system hanging from reinforced cables. They spread out across the field, hovering above every single student present.
Two hundred and twenty drones.
The students looked up at the machines hovering over their heads.
"What the hell is that?"
"Are those... harnesses?"
"I don't like where this is going."
Midnight cracked her whip one more time.
"So this year, there will be only ONE round before the one-versus-one tournament!"
The screens around the stadium began to spin. The crowd leaned forward, and the students held their breath.
The screens stopped.
Two words.
Midnight screamed them into her microphone.
"BATTLE ROYALE!!!!!"
Silence.
Then the arena exploded.
"YEAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The crowd went absolutely insane. People were standing on their feet. Popcorn flew through the air. Someone threw a drink at the person in front of them for no reason.
On the field, the students had mixed reactions. Some were pumped. Some were terrified. Some were already trying to quit.
Bakugo was grinning like a wolf.
Todoroki's expression didn't change, but his fists clenched.
Izuku was muttering at triple the normal speed.
Midnight raised her hand. The crowd settled.
"Now! The rules!!"
The screens shifted to display animated graphics. Cute cartoon versions of students demonstrating each rule as Midnight explained them.
"All two hundred and twenty of you will wear the harness attached to your drone! The drone will carry you to a randomised spawn point across the battlefield!"
The screen showed a cartoon student being lifted and dropped onto a map.
"Once everyone has been placed, there will be a countdown! When it hits zero, you may begin!"
She snapped her fingers. The screen changed.
"The battlefield is the jungle behind our school!"
Some students looked excited. Others looked like they were going to throw up.
From the crowd of General Studies and Business students, a voice yelled out.
"But this isn't fair!! The hero classes have way more combat experience! How is this balanced?!"
Midnight smiled at them. She was waiting for this exact question.
"Glad you asked!" she said. "Now, the point system!"
The screen changed again.
"When you take down or beat another student, you will receive points based on who you defeated! The more points you accumulate, the higher you'll be ranked! At the end of the Battle Royale, the top sixteen students will be selected for the one-versus-one tournament!!"
She held up a finger.
"However! We know that the hero classes have a significant advantage over the other departments!"
"So! To level the playing field, Business class students and General Studies students are allowed to form teams of up to five members!!"
Cheers from the non-hero students. Nervous murmurs from the hero students.
"But keep in mind!" Midnight added, pointing her whip at the crowd. "No teams can work together with other teams! Once your team is formed, you're on your own!"
She turned back to the screens.
"As for point values!"
The screen displayed three tiers.
"Every Business class student is worth ONE point!"
"Every General Studies student is worth TWO points!"
"And every Hero Studies student..."
She paused for dramatic effect.
"TEN POINTS!!"
The non-hero students erupted. The hero students looked at each other nervously. Being worth ten points meant everyone would be hunting them.
Midnight raised her hand one final time.
"And now! The final rules!!"
The screen cleared. Three rules appeared.
"Rule one! You are not allowed to injure a student with excessive force! If you cause serious harm, you will be disqualified and potentially expelled!"
"Rule two! Every twenty minutes, a timer will ring, and the battlefield will shrink! If you are outside the safe zone when the time is up, you will be automatically eliminated! So keep moving!"
She paused, as her grin returned. Wider than before.
"And rule three."
The screen changed. A single name appeared in massive red letters.
AKIRA SHUZENJI — 1,000 POINTS
The stadium went silent.
"A THOUSAND?!"
"ONE STUDENT IS WORTH A THOUSAND POINTS?!"
"THAT'S MORE THAN THE ENTIRE HERO CLASS COMBINED!!"
Midnight cracked her whip over the noise.
"The reason should be obvious!!" she yelled. "He is simply too strong!! So here's the special rule — when the battlefield reaches the final circle, ALL remaining students will be allowed to team up against Akira Shuzenji!! No restrictions! No limits! Everyone versus one!!"
The non-hero students erupted in cheers. Teams were already forming in people's heads. Strategies were being whispered. Eyes turned toward the red-haired boy standing with Class 1-A.
Class 1-A, however, did not cheer.
They knew what kind of demon they would be fighting.
They had seen what this boy did at USJ. They had watched him walk through villains like they were made of paper.
Kirishima leaned toward Kaminari. "Bro. They have no idea what they're signing up for."
Shoji nodded. "They're going to learn the hard way."
Bakugo scoffed. He wasn't looking at the other students. He was looking at Akira with a grin.
A thousand points. That means everyone's coming for you.
His palms crackled.
Good. Means they won't be in my way.
Todoroki stared at the screen. At the name in red letters. His expression was unreadable, but his fists were clenched.
I don't care about the points. I care about the fight.
A thousand points wasn't a reward.
It was bait. And every student who took it was walking into a furnace.
In the VIP box, Mei was laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes.
"A thousand points?!" she wheezed. "They put a bounty on his head!! This is the best Sports Festival I've ever seen!!"
Honoka had her hand over her face. "I pray for the kids."
Jian was grinning. "This is better than anything on TV back home."
Yu was already taking notes on her tablet. "The recruitment implications of this format are fascinating. Whoever survives the final circle against Akira will be worth more than any traditional tournament result."
Nia, still in Wei's arms, pressed her face against the glass.
"Go get them, Mommy and Daddy!!"
Midnight raised both arms toward the sky.
"STUDENTS!! ATTACH YOUR HARNESSES!! THE BATTLE ROYALE BEGINS IN TEN MINUTES!!"
She slashed her whip one final time.
"LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!!!"
