BONUS CHAPTER: 700PS
--<<>>--
The field was in total chaos.
Two hundred and twenty students rushed to strap on their harnesses.
Some students handled it fine. Mainly the hero course kids, who were used to wearing hero costumes. Others, particularly the Business class students who had never worn anything more complex than a tie, fumbled with buckles and clips like they were defusing a freaking bomb.
As this was going on, Momo walked up to Akira.
She created a strip of white cloth from her palm, took his bleeding hand, and began wrapping it carefully.
"Why aren't you healing yourself?"
Akira watched her work with a smile.
"Because this is part of the oath I took."
She paused. Looked up at him. Searched his eyes looking for his normal stubbornness, recklessness, you know, the usual Akira nonsense.
But, she found sincerity.
She smiled as she finished the last loop and tucked in the end.
Then she leaned up and kissed him.
"Good luck."
"You too."
They held each other's gaze for a moment longer. Then they separated and walked to their respective drones.
"ARE YOU READY?!!" Midnight screamed from the stage.
"YES!!!!!!!" two hundred and twenty voices answered.
Some of those voices were confident. Some were terrified. But who cared? The show must go on.
"THEN LET'S DO THIS!!!!!"
CRACK!
Midnight's whip slashed through the air one final time.
The drones activated.
Two hundred and twenty harnesses tightened, and then, all at once, two hundred and twenty students were lifted off the ground.
The stadium erupted.
The students rose into the air like a flock of birds. The drones carried them up, over the stadium walls.
Some students were having the time of their lives.
Kirishima had both fists in the air, screaming with joy. "THIS IS SO MANLY!! I'M FLYING!! LOOK AT ME, I'M FLYING!!"
Mina was spinning in her harness, laughing. "WHEEEEE!! THIS IS BETTER THAN A ROLLER COASTER!!"
Uraraka, who could literally make herself float, was giggling anyway. "This is kind of fun!"
Some students were having the worst day of their lives.
A short purple ball-headed guy from class 1-B yelled for his life.
"I WANT TO GO HOME!! I DIDN'T SIGN UP FOR THIS!!"
A General Studies girl next to him was in a similar state. "WHY ARE WE SO HIGH?! THIS ISN'T SAFE!! WHERE ARE THE SAFETY NETS?!"
There were no safety nets, lol.
A Support class student was crying silently, his tears floating upward into the wind. He had come to U.A. to build machines, not get dropped into a jungle like a soldier.
Below them, the campus buildings passed by. And then, beyond all of it, the forest.
U.A.'s private jungle reserve.
It stretched for kilometres behind the school. The fact that a high school owned a jungle this size was ridiculous.
But then again, this was U.A., and they had a crazy rat running it. So, anything is possible.
As the students flew over the treeline, the drones began to scatter. They broke formation, splitting off in every direction, carrying students to randomised drop points across the jungle.
Teams that had been formed beforehand were dropped together.
Solo students were dropped individually. Each drone descended to a safe height above the canopy, released the harness, and let the student drop the final few metres to the ground.
Bakugo hit the forest floor with an explosion that cleared the bushes around him.
He looked left.
Then right.
Then grinned like a mental patent.
"Come find me, I dare you!!!!"
***
Todoroki landed in a rocky area. He surveyed the terrain. Trees, rocks, and a stream nearby. A good area for him. He could work with this.
***
Momo landed in a small clearing, already creating a staff from her arm before her feet touched the ground. She looked around the treeline, looking for movement. Luckily, she found none.
Good, I have time to prepare.
***
Akira, on the other hand, was still in the air.
His drone carried him to the dead centre of the battlefield.
It hovered above the tallest tree in the jungle, then the harness released.
He landed on the highest branch. The canopy stretched out below him in every direction. The jungle was vast. The students were scattered. And somewhere out there, two hundred and nineteen of them were either hunting or hiding.
He stood up.
He looked out over the forest and waited.
After all the students had been dropped, the drones flew back up. They flew above the treeline and repositioned themselves in a massive ring around the perimeter of the battlefield.
From every drone's speaker, Midnight's voice boomed across the jungle.
"THE DRONES WILL BE SHOWING YOU THE BOUNDARY!! AND IF YOU ARE ELIMINATED, A DRONE WILL TRANSFER YOU OUT!!"
Her voice echoed through the forest.
"SO GET READY!!"
A pause.
"WE BEGIN IN TWENTY SECONDS!!!!!"
A countdown appeared on every drone's display. Glowing red numbers ticking down.
20... 19... 18...
Across the jungle, students tensed.
17... 16... 15...
Teams huddled together, whispering plans. Solo fighters crouched in the undergrowth, listening for movement.
14... 13... 12...
11...
Meanwhile, back at the stadium.
The crowd was going insane. They could hear Midnight's announcements through the speakers, but they couldn't see anything. The students were in a jungle kilometres away, and the screens were not enough.
Then the ground rumbled.
The centre of the stadium floor split open, and a massive structure rose from beneath the field, a towering box-shaped screen array, covered in high-definition displays. It rose like a monolith, rotating slowly until all four sides were visible to every section of the arena.
Midnight's voice came through the stadium speakers.
"For a better experience, we've taken the initiative to set up this lovely screen for extra coverage!! Every drone in the battlefield is equipped with a camera, and the footage will be broadcast live!! You won't miss a single thing!!"
The screens flickered to life. Dozens of camera feeds appeared simultaneously, showing different angles of the jungle, different students, different zones.
The crowd roared in approval.
On every screen, the countdown continued.
Midnight grabbed her microphone.
"SAY IT WITH ME!!!!"
The entire stadium joined in.
"TEN!!"
"NINE!!"
"EIGHT!!"
"SEVEN!!"
"SIX!!"
"FIVE!!"
"FOUR!!"
"THREE!!"
"TWO!!"
"ONE!!"
"AND HERE WE GOOOOO!!!!"
BOOM.
The sound hit the stadium like a shockwave, and it was no firework.
Everyone looked toward the centre of the battlefield.
A ball of red fire had detonated in the sky above the jungle.
It erupted from the tallest tree and shot up like a flare, expanding into a massive sphere of crimson fire that lit up the entire forest below in blood-red light.
In the VIP box, Nia pressed her face against the glass and laughed.
"Nyahahahahah!! Here goes Daddy!!"
The fireball hung in the sky for three seconds, then it changed.
As the flames settled, they left something behind. Letters. Burning words written in fire, hovering above the jungle canopy for every student, every camera, and every viewer to see.
"After the third beep, I am coming for you."
The stadium went silent.
Then it erupted.
"YEAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
In the jungle, two hundred and nineteen students looked up at those words.
Some laughed nervously. Some didn't laugh at all. Some immediately started running. A few business class teams that had planned to hunt Akira in the final circle suddenly reconsidered their life choices.
In one clearing, a team of General Studies students stared at the sky.
"After the third beep?" one whispered.
"Meaning we have an hour."
They looked at each other.
"That sounds manageable, no? The battlefield is really big, and will take a long time to traverse."
They looked at each other and nodded.
***
Akira stood on his branch, hands in his pockets, watching the fire letters dissolve into embers above him.
He closed his eyes.
Now we wait.
***
Elsewhere in the jungle.
Shoto Todoroki stood in a rocky clearing, looking up at the burning words in the sky.
"I will be there."
He lowered his gaze.
However, he didn't have to wait long.
"GETTT HIMMMM!!!!!!"
Five students burst from the treeline.
They had formed up before the drop and made a plan. A simple plan. Find a hero student. Surround them. Five on one. Easy stuff.
Alas, they had found Todoroki out of all people.
Todoroki didn't move, he simply activated his quirk.
Ice bloomed beneath his right foot.
A glacier exploded outward from his position, racing across the ground in every direction. It swallowed the clearing in less than a second.
And it caught all five students.
They didn't even have time to activate their quirks. One moment they were charging. The next, they were frozen. Encased from the neck down in a solid block of ice, their faces sticking out with identical expressions of pure disbelief.
What???
All five of them thought it at the same time.
Todoroki looked at them once, then turned and walked away.
In the stadium, Present Mic's voice exploded from the speakers.
"FIRST BLOOD!!!! SHOTO TODOROKI TAKES DOWN FIVE STUDENTS IN A SINGLE MOVE!! WE HAVE OUR NUMBER ONE FOR NOW, PEOPLE!!"
The rankings appeared on the giant screen.
1st — Todoroki Shoto: 5 points
The arena cheered.
And with that, the first game was underway.
