Chapter 111 - Into The Ashlands

The wind was the first thing that felt wrong.

It did not howl—

it groaned.

A hollow, scorched sigh that dragged loose earth along the ruined ground.

Aryan, Abhi and Ahaan stood at what once was the outer ridge of Bhutala, and now…

there was nothing that resembled life.

Ash drifted through the air like grey snowfall.

The soil beneath their feet had hardened into a burnt crust.

Ahan stepped forward—

and a chunk of ground cracked, collapsing into a shallow crater of dust.

No blood, no corpses.

Just absence.

It felt unnatural.

A barren expanse stretched ahead.

Structures that once stood tall had melted into slag-like mounds.

Some buildings looked as though their foundations had evaporated.

The floors of the old marketplace—

places where traders once yelled prices

and children once ran barefoot—

were now etched with black scorch marks, thin as lightning veins.

Abhi whispered, low, disbelieving—

"Nobody survived this."

But Aryan's eyes narrowed.

"Wrong. Something like this isn't meant to end life.

It's meant to warn."

His hand instinctively tightened into a fist.

The ring pulsed faintly—one dull ember glow.

Ahaan walked ahead, tracing burnt patterns on the ground.

At first they were random, meaningless lines.

Then they formed sequences.

Repeated sequences.

Three parallel arcs.

Five angular swirls.

A downward spiral ending in a split symbol.

Ahaan stopped.

"This is not destruction… it's marking."

The burn marks formed a radius—

as though something stood at the center and expended heat outward.

But at the true center…

was no crater.

No damage.

No collapse.

Just untouched ground.

Smooth, unburnt, unnaturally preserved.

They approached.

And they understood.

There was power anchored here once.

A presence.

Something colossal.

Abhi folded his arms—

his bracelet responded with a faint ripple of bluish gold light across the metal.

"This is the last place Bhutala's core was held, right?"

Ahaan nodded.

Aryan looked forward, voice tight.

"Which means someone took it."

A faint ringing sound echoed

—not sound, more vibration.

Like a quiet hum

beneath the surface of everything.

Ahaan kneeled and pressed his palm to the ground.

For a moment, nothing.

Then a surge.

A flood of sensation—

warm, bright, overwhelming.

He pulled back with a gasp.

"Someone harnessed its energy.

Someone drained the main seat of Bhutala."

Aryan frowned.

"Was it Overlord?"

"No," Ahaan answered immediately.

"His energy doesn't leave residue.

This… does."

They exchanged a silent look.

If not Overlord, then—

someone new?

someone worse?

someone outside the conflict entirely?

A presence feeding off destruction

rather than causing it.

That was far more terrifying.

As they walked deeper, the ash thickened.

Charred scrolls turned to dust beneath their steps.

They reached what remained of the central council hall.

The pillars were twisted

like melted bone.

In the middle lay a single artifact—

half burnt, half preserved.

A seal.

Its insignia scorched beyond full recognition.

Abhi lifted it carefully.

And for the first time

the silence of Bhutala broke.

A sound—

a muffled recording.

Not voice.

Not clear speech.

Just fragments.

"–– evacuate––"

"––they breached––"

"––not him… something else—"

"––run––"

Then it died.

Abhi closed his fist around the seal.

"They weren't wiped out immediately.

They were hunted."

Aryan stared at the horizon.

"Which means whoever did this…

is not done."

Ahaan suddenly turned.

"Look."

At the very end of the devastated settlement

stood a corridor of intact land—

a strip carved perfectly straight

as if shielding something from harm.

Energy brushed past them in a subtle pulse.

Someone passed through recently.

Fresh.

Recently.

Alive.

Aryan stepped forward.

"We will find whoever left this trail."

Abhi nodded.

Ahaan exhaled deeply.

The three of them stood at the edge of ruin—

of memories, lost territory, fractured peace—

and began to walk.

Ash scattered as they moved.

The trail extended into distant untouched forest.

Across that forest lay something waiting.

Someone is waiting.

Someone who left Bhutala in ruin.

Not to conquer.

Not to occupy.

But to erase.
