Cherreads

Chapter 112 - The Silent Ashes

The wind carried dust, ash, and the taste of burnt stone. The trio walked through the blackened stretch of land, where once the gates of Bhutala shimmered with ancient metallic engravings. Now, the very paths were cracked, smoke curling up from smoldering pits.

Ahaan stepped forward first—silent. Behind him Abhi walked, fists tight. Aryan followed, holding the ring inside his palm as if its warmth could explain any of this.

Bhutala no longer felt like a civilization.

Walls had collapsed inward, melted stone dripping and cooled like molten tears. The streets were unrecognizable. The training arena where thousands once gathered was nothing but fractured slabs.

No screams.

No embers rising.

Just stillness.

Only the wind spoke.

"No one's alive here… right?" Aryan whispered, though none answered him.

Ahaan brushed against a charred pillar. Its surface cracked into powder at his touch.

"This wasn't destruction," Ahaan murmured.

"This was erasure."

They were meant to explore—not just for answers, but for proof that Bhutala even existed.

They reached the central square.

Once—this place had festivals.

Once—music breathed deep into its courtyard arches.

Once—warriors trained under halls lit by golden torches.

Now the ground had a crater carved into it. Not by flame, not by explosives—by power.

Aryan kneeled and pressed his ear to the surface.

Even the earth hummed faint remnants of a force that wasn't mortal.

Half-broken weapons lay scattered.

No blood.

Not a body.

Not even bones.

More unsettling.

"Bodies don't disappear," Abhi muttered.

Ahaan answered, voice low.

"Unless something wanted everything here gone. Entire lineage… erased."

That word lingered.

Lineage.

Ahaan's hand tightened around his pendant. The narrator's emblem pulsed.

A subtle pounding—so soft at first that Aryan mistook it for his heartbeat.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

From the far side—a collapsed municipal tower—came a muffled rhythm.

Stone shifted.

Aryan spun.

A crack had opened in the rubble—just enough to show movement inside.

"Someone's alive."

The three tore through debris. Stones rolled. Smoke burst upward.

Finally—beneath a collapsed pillar—they found a hidden hatchway, half melted shut.

Ahaan forced it open.

A staircase spiraled downward—into darkness.

Their heartbeats aligned.

The bunker was not untouched.

Walls were damaged. Air was metallic.

But torch marks still glowed faintly.

In the end passage—they saw her.

Rhea.

Collapsed near the medical crates, hair concreted with soot, breathing shallow. The moment Abhi saw her, his chest tightened so violently he couldn't speak.

Her eyes trembled open.

"Abhi…?"

He collapsed beside her instantly.

His voice shattered.

"I'm here… I'm right here."

She managed a faint smile despite the agony.

Ahaan stepped back. Aryan looked away.

The moment was not theirs.

Her breaths faltered.

"They came without warning… Outfits X… three of them… all marked… powered… we ran… most couldn't escape…"

She coughed, blood dusting her lips.

"…they said our bloodline… ends today."

Abhi froze.

Rhea whispered, struggling even to blink.

"I waited because… I knew you'd come."

He held her hand.

Warm fading into cold.

And then—stillness.

Abhi did not move for several breaths. His tears did not fall—yet the absence of tears cut sharper than any scream.

Behind her body—an etched panel.

Spiral symbols.

Sigils of Bhutala's ancient guardians.

Ahaan deciphered the inscription aloud:

"If we fall…

leave nothing behind for them.

Let ruin take our names,

but not our purpose."

Inside were scroll fragments—burnt at edges.

Records. Coordinates. Warnings.

Aryan lifted one fragment.

"Because lineage destroyed means no return…"

"…and no claim to power."

Ahaan closed the panel.

They stood.

Silent.

No farewell words spoken—because words were too small.

They exited the bunker.

Outside, the moonlight spilled across ruins like frostwater.

Abhi walked ahead—face blank.

Not rage.

Not grief.

Something colder.

Resolve.

Ahaan spoke first.

"We cannot restore this place."

Aryan answered.

"But those who did this… we'll end them."

Ahaan nodded.

"We follow their trail. Outfits X is not hiding. They want us to come."

Abhi finally spoke.

Voice flat.

Unshaking.

"Then we go."
