What Fear Asked in a Quiet Voice

Fear did not arrive screaming.

It arrived politely.

The first request came at dawn, delivered with careful phrasing and respectful distance. A delegation from the southern settlements requested a private audience. No accusations. No demands. Only concern.

Cassian read the request aloud, then looked up slowly. "They are afraid."

"Yes," I replied. "That is different from opposition."

Lucien stood near the fire, eyes fixed on the horizon. "Fear spreads faster than force."

"Yes," I said. "And it does not need orders."

The delegation arrived without guards.

Five people. Three elders. One healer. One courier.

They bowed, hands open.

"We believe in what you are doing," the eldest said carefully. "But our people are afraid to act."

I waited.

"They are afraid their names will outlive their intentions," he continued. "That a single choice will define them forever."

Lucien's jaw tightened.
