Chapter 46 - CHAPTER 46

The Pause That Refused to Break

The pause held.

That was what frightened them most.

Stonecliff had expected noise after the order failed. Protests. Defiance. A mistake large enough to justify force. Instead, the basin breathed. Slowly. Deliberately. As if waiting had become a language everyone suddenly understood.

The urgency came just before noon.

A notice spread through adjacent regions announcing a public health emergency. Contaminated water. Quarantine recommended. Movement discouraged. Supplies centralized for distribution.

Lucien swore under his breath. "That is a lie."

"Yes," I said. "A careful one."

Cassian scanned the details. "They are citing irregular reports. Anonymous sources."
