The air was filled with the cacophony of various animalsbarking, meowing, and birdsong. Dozens of small creatures could be seen chasing each other and playing throughout the area.
There was even a koala climbing a tree, pursued by a blue-skinned humanoid creature. Is that an alien? Qin Yan wondered to himself. He couldn't help but think that this was truly the home of an extraordinary family.
"Wow! It's like we're out in the countryside, Brother Qin Yan!"
Liya couldn't help but exclaim in wonder at the changing scenery, her voice as clear and crisp as a bell.
"Hahaha! This isn't the countryside, little one. This is just the courtyard on the first floor."
Mrs. Brief narrowed her eyes as a smile as warm as a spring breeze spread across her face. Her voice was soft and sweet, giving off a sense of gentle comfort.
As she spoke, Mrs. Brief continued to lead the way with graceful strides along a pedestrian path paved with exquisite white floor tiles. She moved like a noble swan gliding across a lakeelegant, poised, and utterly captivating.
"There are so many kittens and puppies here!"
Liya looked around like a curious kitten herself, her eyes darting back and forth as she took in all the new sights of the courtyard.
"That's right. My husband and I both adore animals. Many of the creatures in this yard were rescued from the neighborhood by my husband. They were abandoned stray cats, wild dogs, even dinosaurs... that's why there are so many of them here," Mrs. Brief explained softly as they walked. Her gait was swaying and rhythmic, exuding a sense of charm and sophistication.
To Qin Yan, she was a beautiful sight to behold, radiating effortless grace.
Qin Yan already knew this about her; the original story mentioned that both she and Dr. Briefs were great animal lovers who frequently adopted abandoned pets.
Rustle, rustle, rustle!
Suddenly, a series of strange noises came from a thicket of grass beside the path.
"Roar!!!"
A pitch-black dinosaur suddenly lunged out of the bushes. It bared its teeth at Qin Yan and his companion, letting out a deafening, piercing roar.
"Wow! How interesting!"
Looking at the fierce dinosaur that was dozens of times larger than herself, Liya wasn't afraid at all. On the contrary, her eyes sparkled with excitement. It wasn't surprisingto her, these creatures were nothing more than mere toys.
"Haha! Really?"
Mrs. Brief laughed, though she was secretly a bit surprised. She hadn't expected Qin Yan and the girl to remain so calm. After all, they were just children. Anyone else their age would have had their hair standing on end from fear.
"Mhm!" Liya nodded happily.
Clang! Clatter!
Just then, the sound of a bicycle slowly approaching echoed along the tiled path.
"Oh! Dear, who has come to visit?"
The newcomer was none other than Dr. Briefs. He spoke to his wife while casually pedaling his bicycle.
"Ah! You're finally here, honey!" Mrs. Brief called out with a look of delight, waving her hand toward her husband.
Seeing Dr. Briefs approaching so leisurely on his bike, Qin Yan also felt a surge of joy. Finally, the man had arrived.
Dr. Briefs had light blue hair and wore a pair of reading glasses. He had a cigarette dangling from his lips and, despite his relatively youthful appearance, he already sported a small handlebar mustache. He wore a simple white lab coat, and perched on his left shoulder was a small, pitch-black kitten with a dazed, adorable expression. That was his beloved pet, Scratch.
In the original story, no matter where Dr. Briefs went, this little black cat was always perched on his shoulder. It was clear how much he doted on the creature.
Dr. Briefs was the founder of the Capsule Corporation, a brilliant but eccentric world-renowned scientist.
He was also a humorous character with a comedic streak. In the first part of the original Dragon Ball series, he was often seen in a "cold war" with his wife, and Bulma didn't quite trust him because he collected a lot of... questionable reading material. Well, men will be men.
This eccentricity also explained why Dr. Briefs and all his descendants were named after types of English underwear. Briefs, Tights, Bulma (Bloomers), Trunks, and Brathe names literally translated to various forms of undergarments and gym wear.
These names are a bit... suggestive. Pretty perverted, actually, Qin Yan grumbled inwardly, feeling a bit of cold sweat on his brow.
Unlike many characters from the first part of Dragon Ball who became irrelevant in the second part, Dragon Ball Z, Dr. Briefs remained important. While he didn't affect the plot much when Goku was a child, he played a crucial role during the Namek Saga and the Cell Saga.
Dr. Briefs was a genius. His invention of the "Hoi-Poi Capsule" had drastically advanced human civilization. Many of the convenient devices and electronic machines Bulma used during her adventures were also his creations.
When Bulma, Krillin, and Son Gohan needed to go to Planet Namek to find new Dragon Balls, the Doctor used the small spaceship Goku had arrived in as a model to build a much larger one for the trio. Later, he built another one for Goku.
He was even the one who built the Gravity Chamber used by Vegeta for his training.
This was exactly why Qin Yan had come to find Dr. Briefs. He wanted to ask the scientist to help manufacture a spaceship capable of interstellar travel and a Gravity Chamber. Although Qin Yan didn't need the Gravity Chamber himself, his parents could use it for their cultivation.
Though Dr. Briefs had an eccentric personality, he was a kind-hearted man at his core. In the original story, in May of Age 767, just before the Cell Games, he helped Bulma repair Android 16 and even removed the explosive device from inside the android's body.
He had cautioned everyone not to tell Android 16 about it. Later, when Android 16 attempted to self-destruct to take Cell with him, the plan failed, and he was killed by Cell.
That death awakened the hidden rage in Son Gohan's heart, leading to his transformation into a Super Saiyan 2 and the subsequent brutal beatdown of Cell.
As Qin Yan reminisced, Dr. Briefs brought his bicycle to a stop in front of them.
"...And who are these two little ones?"
Dr. Briefs hit the brakes, planting one foot on the ground to steady himself as he looked at Qin Yan and Liya before turning to his wife.
"Oh my! Honey, you don't know? They came specifically looking for you!"
Now it was Mrs. Brief's turn to be confused. She had assumed her husband knew who these children were.
"This... I have no idea. I've never seen them before." Dr. Briefs frowned slightly, a thousand questions running through his mind. He truly didn't recognize them. He looked back at Qin Yan and Liya and asked, "Hello there, little ones. Where are you from, and is there something I can help you with?"
"Haha! Hello, Dr. Briefs," Qin Yan greeted him with a polite smile, coming straight to the point about their origins. "We've come from outer space, and we'd like to ask for a favor!"
"Wha... What?"
Qin Yan's words left Dr. Briefs and his wife utterly stunned. They never would have expected that the two children standing before them were actually aliens from outer space.
