For a moment neither of them spoke.
The lab was quiet except for the low, steady hum of the machines. Lines of code continued to scroll across the monitors, unaware that something far more complicated than any algorithm had just happened a few feet away.
Elias was still leaning against the desk.
Dominic was still standing close.
Too close.
And yet neither of them moved.
Elias's mind, which usually ran faster than any system he had ever built, felt strangely slow.
One clear thought repeated itself.
That just happened.
Dominic watched him carefully.
The corner of his mouth curved slightly.
"You look like someone just rewrote your operating system."
Elias blinked once.
"That was… unexpected."
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
"Unexpected?"
"Yes."
"You literally didn't stop me."
"That doesn't make it expected."
Dominic laughed softly.
"You are unbelievable."
Elias rubbed his temple.
"I just kissed you."
"Yes."
"And your response is to analyze the situation like a lab experiment."
"That's how I process things."
Dominic shook his head with amusement.
"You didn't process it."
"What do you mean?"
Dominic leaned forward slightly again.
"You kissed me back."
Elias froze.
He hadn't meant to make that obvious.
Dominic noticed immediately.
A slow smile spread across his face.
"Oh," he said quietly.
"So you didn't realize you did that."
Elias cleared his throat.
"That's not the point."
"It's a pretty important point."
Elias finally straightened away from the desk, creating a few inches of distance between them.
Dominic watched the movement but didn't comment.
"Let's be rational about this," Elias said.
Dominic sighed.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The escape plan."
"This isn't an escape plan."
"You're about to pretend that kiss was a mistake."
Elias hesitated.
Dominic's eyes narrowed slightly.
"See?"
"I didn't say that."
"You were thinking it."
Elias looked away briefly.
Dominic softened his voice.
"Was it?"
Elias didn't answer immediately.
The memory of the kiss was still fresh.
Unexpectedly warm.
Unexpectedly natural.
Not confusing the way he had always assumed it would be.
That realization alone unsettled him.
Dominic waited patiently.
Finally Elias said quietly,
"No."
Dominic blinked.
"No?"
"It wasn't a mistake."
The answer seemed to surprise both of them.
Dominic studied his face carefully.
"Wow," he murmured.
"That might be the most honest thing you've said all night."
Elias exhaled slowly.
"That doesn't mean I understand it."
"You don't have to understand it."
"I prefer understanding things."
Dominic chuckled.
"You're trying to apply logic to kissing."
"I apply logic to everything."
Dominic leaned casually against the desk again.
"That explains a lot."
Elias frowned.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means you've been overthinking something simple for years."
"It's not simple."
Dominic tilted his head slightly.
"Isn't it?"
He gestured lightly between them.
"I like you."
Elias didn't respond.
Dominic continued.
"You like me."
"That's… not proven."
Dominic laughed again.
"You kissed me back."
"That could have been instinct."
Dominic smiled wider.
"Yeah. Instinct."
His voice softened slightly.
"Instincts usually reveal the truth."
Elias opened his mouth to argue, but the system behind them spoke suddenly.
Unusual physiological responses detected.
Both men turned toward the monitors.
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
"Did your machine just interrupt us?"
Elias sighed.
"It analyzes environmental changes."
Dominic smirked.
"So it noticed the kiss."
"It noticed changes in biometric patterns."
"That's a very technical way to say the same thing."
Dominic stepped closer to the console, glancing at the screen.
"Can it see everything we do?"
"Not everything."
Dominic turned back toward Elias slowly.
"That's comforting."
Elias crossed his arms.
"It's not sentient."
"Still feels like we're being judged by a robot."
The system spoke again.
No judgment detected.
Dominic blinked.
"Okay that's creepy."
Elias almost smiled.
"It's just responding to input."
Dominic leaned closer to the screen.
"Hey system," he said casually.
Yes.
"Did Elias enjoy that kiss?"
Elias immediately groaned.
"Dominic"
The system responded instantly.
Biometric indicators suggest positive emotional and physiological response.
Dominic burst out laughing.
"Oh my god."
Elias buried his face in his hand.
"This is not helpful."
Dominic wiped a tear from his eye.
"You built the most advanced intelligence system in existence and it just confirmed you liked kissing me."
"It's misinterpreting the data."
Dominic stepped closer again.
His voice lowered.
"You want to test that theory?"
Elias looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Dominic's smile was slow and deliberate.
"It means we could collect more data."
Elias stared at him.
"You're impossible."
Dominic leaned closer again.
"And yet you still kissed me back."
Elias felt his pulse quicken again.
Dominic's voice dropped almost to a whisper.
"Tell me something honestly."
"What?"
Dominic held his gaze.
"Do you want to do it again?"
The question lingered between them.
This time Elias didn't overthink it.
He stepped forward.
And kissed Dominic first.
Dominic froze for half a second in surprise.
Then he smiled into the kiss.
And somewhere behind them, the system quietly recorded another anomaly.
