Chapter 159 - Chapter 152 — Morning, Without Distance

They didn't notice when the night ended.

There was no clear transition no moment where darkness gave way to light in a way that felt significant.

But eventually, the lab changed.

The dim emergency glow softened as faint daylight began filtering in through the high windows, stretching pale lines across the floor.

Elias noticed it first.

Not because of the light itself

But because of the shift in time.

He had not left.

He had not reset.

He had not created distance.

And Dominic was still there.

Sitting on the edge of the console platform again, sleeves pushed slightly up, watching him like he had been for longer than either of them had tracked.

"You didn't sleep," Dominic said.

Elias looked at him.

"That is correct."

Dominic tilted his head.

"That's not normal."

"It is consistent with my usual patterns under heightened conditions."

Dominic smirked faintly.

"So this qualifies as 'heightened conditions'?"

Elias paused.

Then

"Yes."

Dominic laughed quietly.

"Yeah… fair."

A brief silence settled.

But it wasn't uncomfortable.

It wasn't heavy.

It was… calm.

Different from everything that had come before.

Dominic studied him again.

"You look different."

Elias frowned slightly.

"That is unlikely. No structural changes have occurred."

Dominic shook his head.

"Not like that."

A pause.

"You just… don't look like you're about to disappear anymore."

Elias considered that.

Then nodded once.

"That is accurate."

Dominic's expression softened.

"Good."

Elias glanced toward the inactive system.

The dark screens.

The absence of noise.

"I should restore functionality," he said.

Dominic followed his gaze.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"But not right now."

Elias looked at him.

"Explain."

Dominic shrugged slightly.

"You don't have to jump back into it immediately."

Elias tilted his head.

"That is inefficient."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"And yet… you're still here."

Elias didn't respond.

Because that

That was still happening.

Still true.

Dominic slid off the platform and walked toward him slowly.

No rush.

No tension.

Just… intention.

"You always go back to work when things get complicated," Dominic said.

Elias frowned slightly.

"That is not an emotional response."

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

"It absolutely is."

Elias hesitated.

Then

"That may be partially accurate."

Dominic smiled.

"Progress."

Elias looked at him carefully.

"You are observing behavioral changes."

"Yeah."

"And you find them acceptable."

Dominic stepped closer.

"I find them… interesting."

Elias tilted his head.

"Clarify."

Dominic stopped in front of him.

Close but not closing the distance completely this time.

"You're not running."

Elias answered simply.

"No."

"You're not hiding behind the system."

"No."

"And you're not pretending last night didn't happen."

Elias held his gaze.

"That would be illogical."

Dominic laughed softly.

"You really don't do denial, do you?"

"No."

Dominic nodded.

"Good."

A pause.

Then

"Because I don't either."

The words settled quietly between them.

No pressure.

No weight.

Just truth.

Elias studied him.

"You remain here."

Dominic nodded.

"Yes."

"That is consistent."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"I told you."

Elias paused.

Then said

"I believe you."

Dominic blinked.

That

That was new.

"You do?"

"Yes."

Dominic let out a slow breath.

"Okay… yeah, don't say that like it's nothing."

"It is not nothing."

"I know."

Dominic ran a hand through his hair, looking briefly away before meeting his gaze again.

"That matters."

Elias nodded once.

"Yes."

Another quiet moment passed.

Then Dominic stepped closer again.

This time, closing the distance fully.

Not urgent.

Not intense.

Just… natural.

Elias didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Didn't hesitate.

Dominic's hand brushed lightly against his again.

Elias felt it.

But it didn't spark tension like before.

It felt… familiar.

"You're getting used to this," Dominic murmured.

Elias considered it.

"Yes."

Dominic smiled.

"That's dangerous."

Elias raised an eyebrow.

"Explain."

Dominic leaned slightly closer.

"Because now I don't think you're going to let me go."

Elias looked at him.

"That is incorrect."

Dominic blinked.

"Oh?"

Elias's voice was calm.

"I am not letting you stay."

A pause.

Then

"I am choosing you to stay."

Dominic went completely still.

That landed harder than anything else.

Elias noticed.

"That distinction is important," he added.

Dominic let out a quiet breath.

"Yeah…"

A small, almost disbelieving laugh followed.

"Yeah, it is."

He stepped closer if that was even possible and rested his forehead lightly against Elias's again.

"You don't say things halfway, do you?"

"No."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"Good."

A pause.

Then

"I like it better that way."

Elias didn't respond.

But he didn't pull away either.

The light in the room grew a little brighter.

Morning fully settling in.

And for once

Elias didn't rush to meet it.

He stayed exactly where he was.

Because for the first time in a long time

There was something more important than control.

Something more important than systems.

Something that didn't require analysis to understand.

And for once

That was enough.
