Chapter 160 - Chapter 153 — The First Crack in Control

The system came back online at 09:12.

Elias didn't announce it.

He didn't need to.

The lab changed the moment power surged back through the network screens flickering awake one by one, low hum building into a steady pulse, data streams reappearing like nothing had ever interrupted them.

But something had.

And Elias felt it immediately.

Not in the code.

In himself.

Dominic noticed it too.

"You're back in your head," he said quietly.

Elias didn't deny it.

"Yes."

He stood in front of the main console again, posture straighter now, focus sharper like slipping back into something familiar.

Something structured.

Something safe.

Dominic leaned against the edge of the desk, watching him carefully.

"You always do that."

Elias glanced at him.

"Do what?"

"Shift."

Elias frowned slightly.

"That is not a precise description."

Dominic pushed off the desk and walked closer.

"It is if you know you."

Elias didn't respond.

Because that

That was the problem.

Dominic stopped beside him, looking at the reactivating system.

"Everything okay?"

Elias's eyes moved across the data.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Stability has been restored."

Dominic nodded.

"Good."

But he didn't move away.

Didn't step back.

He stayed.

Watching Elias instead of the screens.

"You're quieter now," Dominic added.

Elias kept his attention forward.

"I am processing."

"Yeah," Dominic said softly.

"I figured."

A brief silence settled.

But this one felt different.

Not calm.

Not steady.

Tight.

Elias noticed it.

So did Dominic.

"You're doing it again," Dominic said.

Elias looked at him.

"Clarify."

"You're pulling back."

Elias frowned.

"That is not intentional."

Dominic held his gaze.

"It never is."

That

That landed.

Elias didn't respond immediately.

Because he recognized it.

The shift.

The instinct to regain control.

To compartmentalize.

To create space

Even when he didn't want to.

"I am not withdrawing," Elias said finally.

Dominic tilted his head slightly.

"Then why does it feel like you are?"

Elias hesitated.

Because that question didn't have a clean answer.

Dominic stepped closer.

Not touching him yet.

Just closing distance.

"You were right here," he said quietly.

A small gesture between them.

"And now you're… somewhere else."

Elias exhaled slowly.

"That is not a deliberate action."

"I know."

Dominic's voice softened.

"But it still happens."

Elias looked at him.

Really looked this time.

At the way Dominic wasn't accusing him.

Wasn't angry.

Just… noticing.

And that made it harder to ignore.

"I am recalibrating," Elias admitted.

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

"Recalibrating what?"

Elias paused.

Then

"This."

A small gesture between them.

Dominic didn't smile.

Didn't joke.

He just nodded once.

"Okay."

A pause.

"But don't do it alone."

Elias frowned slightly.

"That is not how recalibration functions."

Dominic stepped closer again.

This time, his hand brushed lightly against Elias's.

Not forcing contact.

Just… offering it.

"Then change how it works."

Elias looked down briefly at their hands.

Then back at him.

"That is inefficient."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"Yeah, you keep saying that."

A beat.

"But it's working."

Elias didn't respond.

Because that

That was also true.

Dominic's hand shifted slightly, fingers brushing more intentionally now.

Elias felt it.

And for a second

His instinct was to step back.

To create space.

To think.

But he didn't.

He stayed.

Dominic noticed immediately.

"There," he said softly.

Elias frowned.

"What?"

"You almost pulled away."

Elias paused.

"Yes."

"But you didn't."

Elias looked at him.

"No."

Dominic's expression softened.

"That's the part that matters."

Elias exhaled quietly.

"That is a simplified conclusion."

Dominic smiled.

"It's the right one."

A small silence followed.

Then Dominic added

"You don't have to be perfect at this."

Elias tilted his head.

"Define 'perfect.'"

Dominic laughed softly.

"Exactly."

Elias considered that.

Then nodded slightly.

"That is… unclear."

Dominic stepped closer again, this time fully closing the space.

"You don't need to get it right every time."

Elias looked at him.

"That contradicts my standard operating process."

Dominic shrugged.

"Maybe that process needs an update."

Elias almost responded

Then stopped.

Because something about that didn't feel wrong.

Just… unfamiliar.

Dominic watched him carefully.

"You're thinking again."

"Yes."

"Good or bad?"

Elias hesitated.

Then

"Uncertain."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"I'll take that."

A pause.

Then he added quietly

"As long as you're still here."

Elias met his gaze.

"I am."

Dominic nodded.

"Yeah."

A small silence settled again.

Then

Elias moved.

Not away.

Closer.

Closing the space himself this time.

Dominic blinked slightly.

"You sure?" he asked.

Elias didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

And that

That was the first real crack.

Not in the system.

Not in the world outside.

But in Elias's control.

Because for the first time

He didn't try to fix it.

He chose to let it stay broken.

And when he kissed Dominic again

It wasn't perfect.

It wasn't calculated.

It wasn't controlled.

But it was real.

And that was enough.
