Chapter 162 - Chapter 155 — The Thing He Didn’t See Coming

It should have felt stable.

That's what Elias told himself.

The system was back online. The breach had been contained. Every vulnerability he could identify had been patched, reinforced, monitored.

From a technical standpoint

Everything was under control.

And yet

He couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted beyond his reach.

Not in the code.

Not in the system.

Somewhere else.

"You're thinking again."

Dominic's voice came from behind him, softer now less questioning, more certain.

Elias didn't turn immediately.

"Yes."

Dominic stepped closer.

"That one sounds heavier."

Elias's fingers rested still against the console.

"That is an imprecise observation."

Dominic huffed a quiet laugh.

"You always say that when it's exactly right."

Elias exhaled slowly.

Then turned.

Dominic was already close.

Too close to ignore.

Too close to pretend this was just another moment.

"What are you thinking about?" Dominic asked.

Elias hesitated.

That alone was enough to draw Dominic's full attention.

"You don't hesitate unless it matters," he added.

Elias studied him.

Then answered quietly

"I miscalculated."

Dominic frowned.

"About what?"

Elias glanced briefly at the system behind him.

Then back at Dominic.

"The breach."

Dominic's expression shifted slightly.

"You stopped it."

"Yes."

"Then what's the problem?"

Elias's voice lowered.

"I did not detect it early enough."

Dominic tilted his head.

"That doesn't sound like you."

"It is not acceptable."

Dominic stepped closer.

"You handled it."

"That is not the same as preventing it."

Dominic watched him carefully.

Then

"You're not just talking about the system."

Elias didn't respond.

Because that

That was the part he hadn't fully said yet.

Dominic took another step forward.

"What else did you miss?"

Elias's jaw tightened slightly.

Then

"You."

The word landed quietly.

But it hit harder than anything else.

Dominic blinked.

"…Me?"

Elias nodded once.

"Yes."

Dominic let out a small, disbelieving breath.

"You're going to have to explain that one."

Elias looked at him directly.

"I did not anticipate your return."

Dominic's expression softened slightly.

"Yeah, well… neither did I."

Elias continued

"I did not account for the effect of your presence."

Dominic raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds like something you'd normally calculate."

"Yes."

A pause.

"I was unable to."

Dominic went quiet.

Because that

That wasn't something Elias said lightly.

"You couldn't?" Dominic asked.

Elias shook his head slightly.

"No."

Dominic studied him.

"Why?"

Elias hesitated.

Then answered, slower this time

"Because I did not understand it."

Dominic's breath caught just slightly.

Elias added

"I still do not."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Dominic didn't rush to fill it.

Didn't joke.

Didn't soften it.

He just… let it exist.

Because this

This was Elias, unfiltered.

And that didn't happen often.

"What part don't you understand?" Dominic asked quietly.

Elias exhaled slowly.

"This."

A small gesture between them.

"The lack of predictability."

"The loss of control."

A pause.

"The importance."

Dominic's expression changed.

Not amused.

Not teasing.

Something deeper.

"You don't like not being in control," he said.

Elias answered immediately.

"No."

Dominic nodded.

"Yeah, I figured."

Elias continued

"But I did not expect to… accept it."

Dominic blinked.

"You're accepting it?"

Elias met his gaze.

"Yes."

Dominic let out a quiet breath.

"Okay… that's new."

Elias nodded once.

"Yes."

Dominic stepped closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Not because he was unsure

But because he understood the weight of what was happening.

"You didn't miss me," Dominic said softly.

Elias frowned slightly.

"That is not accurate."

Dominic shook his head.

"I mean… you didn't fail to see me."

A pause.

"You just didn't expect me to matter like this."

Elias went still.

Because that

That was correct.

"Yes," he said quietly.

Dominic smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

Another step closer.

"And now?"

Elias didn't hesitate.

"You do."

The certainty in his voice was immediate.

Unquestioned.

Dominic's breath slowed.

"Okay."

A pause.

"Yeah… I needed to hear that."

Elias tilted his head slightly.

"That was not a required statement."

Dominic laughed softly.

"For you? No."

A beat.

"For me? Yeah."

Elias considered that.

Then nodded once.

"Understood."

A quiet silence followed.

Then Dominic's hand lifted, resting lightly against Elias's side again.

Familiar now.

Natural.

Elias felt it

But didn't react the way he used to.

No tension.

No hesitation.

Just… awareness.

"You didn't see me coming," Dominic murmured.

Elias answered simply

"No."

Dominic leaned closer.

"And now you can't ignore me."

Elias met his gaze.

"That is also accurate."

Dominic smiled.

"Good."

A pause.

Then

"Because I'm not going anywhere."

Elias didn't question it this time.

Didn't analyze it.

Didn't challenge it.

He just

Accepted it.

And when he stepped closer again

Closing the distance on his own

It wasn't instinct.

It wasn't reaction.

It was something else.

Something deliberate.

Something chosen.

When he kissed Dominic this time

There was no hesitation left.

No uncertainty.

No edge they were standing on.

Because that line

They had already crossed it.

And now

There was no going back.

Not that either of them wanted to.
