Chapter 161 - Chapter 154 — The Part He Couldn’t Control

The system stabilized.

Fully.

Every process restored. Every function responding within normal parameters. Every vulnerability temporarily sealed.

On the surface

Everything was back under control.

Elias stood in front of the main console, eyes scanning the data as it streamed steadily across the screens.

No anomalies.

No breaches.

No immediate threats.

It should have felt… reassuring.

It didn't.

Because the one thing he couldn't map, predict, or stabilize

Was standing right behind him.

"You're doing it again."

Dominic's voice was quieter this time.

Not teasing.

Not amused.

Just… aware.

Elias didn't turn around immediately.

"I am verifying system integrity."

Dominic took a step closer.

"I know."

Another step.

"But that's not all you're doing."

Elias's fingers paused briefly over the interface.

Then resumed.

"That is incorrect."

Dominic stopped just behind him now.

Close enough that Elias could feel him.

Not touching.

Just… there.

"You always go back to this when something matters too much."

Elias didn't respond.

Because that

Was accurate.

Dominic exhaled softly.

"I'm not saying it's a bad thing."

A pause.

"But don't disappear into it."

Elias's hand stilled again.

This time, he didn't continue.

Slowly

He turned.

Dominic was right there.

Closer than expected.

Closer than safe.

Elias looked at him carefully.

"I am not disappearing."

Dominic tilted his head.

"You almost did."

Elias frowned slightly.

"That was a temporary shift in focus."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

A beat.

"And you came back."

Elias held his gaze.

"Yes."

Dominic stepped closer.

Closing the last bit of distance between them.

"Good."

The word was soft.

Simple.

But it carried weight.

Elias felt it.

The difference between before and now.

Before

Dominic would have let him go.

Let him retreat.

Now

He stayed.

Pulled him back.

Not forcefully.

But deliberately.

"You're learning," Dominic said quietly.

Elias raised an eyebrow.

"That implies previous deficiency."

Dominic laughed softly.

"You really hear everything like that, don't you?"

"Yes."

Dominic shook his head.

"Unbelievable."

But his expression softened.

"I meant… you're not running anymore."

Elias paused.

Then nodded once.

"That is accurate."

Dominic studied him.

"And it's hard."

Elias didn't answer immediately.

Then

"Yes."

The honesty surprised even him.

Dominic noticed.

"You don't say that often."

"No."

Dominic stepped closer if that was even possible and his hand finally lifted, resting lightly against Elias's arm.

Not sudden.

Not demanding.

Just… contact.

Elias felt it instantly.

The grounding.

The pull.

The distraction.

And this time

He didn't fight it.

Dominic watched his reaction carefully.

"You didn't flinch."

Elias answered simply.

"I am adapting."

Dominic smiled.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"You are."

Elias glanced briefly at the system behind him.

Then back at Dominic.

"The system is stable."

Dominic nodded.

"Good."

Elias hesitated.

Then added

"I am not."

The words came out quieter.

Less certain.

But real.

Dominic didn't react immediately.

Didn't joke.

Didn't deflect.

He just looked at him.

"You don't have to be," he said softly.

Elias frowned.

"That is not an acceptable state."

Dominic shrugged slightly.

"It is right now."

Elias studied him.

"That contradicts my operational framework."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

A beat.

"Maybe that framework isn't built for this."

Elias didn't respond.

Because that

That was becoming increasingly clear.

Dominic's hand shifted slightly, fingers brushing more intentionally against his arm.

Elias felt it again.

Stronger this time.

Not just physical.

Something else layered beneath it.

"You feel that?" Dominic asked quietly.

Elias didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Dominic nodded.

"Good."

A pause.

Then

"You don't need to control everything."

Elias looked at him.

"That is not a viable long-term strategy."

Dominic stepped closer, voice lower now.

"Maybe not."

A beat.

"But right now?"

Elias held his gaze.

"Yes?"

Dominic's hand moved slightly, resting more firmly now not holding him in place, just… steady.

"Right now, you don't need to control this."

Elias exhaled slowly.

Because that

That was the hardest part.

Letting something exist without defining it.

Without structuring it.

Without securing it.

"I am not controlling it," he said quietly.

Dominic smiled faintly.

"I know."

A pause.

"That's why this works."

Elias frowned slightly.

"Define 'works.'"

Dominic chuckled under his breath.

"You really don't make this easy."

"No."

Dominic stepped closer.

Their foreheads nearly touching now.

"This works," he said softly, "because you're here."

Elias's breath slowed.

"And you're not trying to turn it into something else."

Elias didn't respond.

Because that

That was new.

Dominic's voice dropped further.

"You're just… in it."

Elias looked at him.

And for once

There was no argument.

No correction.

No analysis.

Just quiet acknowledgment.

"Yes," he said.

Dominic smiled.

Soft.

Certain.

"Good."

A small silence followed.

Then

Elias moved first.

Closing the last inch of space.

And when he kissed Dominic again

It wasn't about proving anything.

It wasn't about tension.

It wasn't even about progression.

It was about letting go.

Just enough

To feel something he couldn't control.

And for once

Not needing to.
