Involving the DEA, and specifically a senior agent who was likely using his position to traffic drugs...
Director Phil Harris of the FBI Los Angeles Field Office finally understood why a seemingly ordinary tip-off letter had been solemnly delivered to his desk.
"Is there any evidence?"
Director Phil asked.
The FBI, under the US Department of Justice, wielded immense power.
It could investigate organized crime, public corruption, financial crimes, fraud against the government, bribery, copyright infringement, civil rights violations, bank robbery, extortion, kidnapping, air piracy, terrorism, espionage, interstate crime, drug trafficking, and other violations of US law.
Corruption within the DEA was fair game, as the FBI and DEA were separate systems.
Therefore, Director Phil didn't mind intervening in the investigation.
Provided they could earn credit for it.
Otherwise, given the FBI's notoriety within the US, he believed the DEA wouldn't cooperate at all.
Deputy Director Frye shook his head: "Stansfield is very cautious. One of our informants reported him before, but not long after, the informant died, seemingly because the news leaked."
Director Phil was immediately displeased: "Frye, this makes it difficult for me."
A senior agent suddenly spoke up: "Director, since the letter reported that the man named Michael..."
"We can ignore Stansfield and the DEA for now and investigate this thug named Michael first to see if he really has drugs hidden in his home."
"If we verify that, we can detain Michael. Using him as a breakthrough point to investigate Stansfield wouldn't be too late."
That was a good suggestion!
Director Phil nodded, looked at the senior agent, and encouraged him with a smile: "Jonathan is right. Frye, send your men to investigate Michael first."
"Conveniently, you already have agents planted in that apartment building. Just have them investigate together."
Suddenly, as if remembering something...
He shook his head and continued to Deputy Director Frye: "You don't need to investigate the California Highway Robbery case anymore."
"That's the LAPD's case. We just need to cooperate in issuing a warrant."
"Back then, we proposed detaining Dominic and his crew, but the LAPD let them get bailed out."
"They have to bear the consequences of that result."
Seeing Director Phil wanting to dump the blame for failing to solve Dom's highway robbery case onto the LAPD...
Deputy Director Frye opened his mouth, knowing this was actually the safest course of action.
Because all signs indicated that the Toretto siblings and their core members had fled Los Angeles, or even California.
Who knew if they had gone abroad or were hiding in some remote town under fake names?
Continuing to investigate and track them would likely yield little result.
The black Deputy Director actually didn't want to bother with it anymore either.
But glancing at the reluctant faces of his subordinates beside him...
He sighed. "Understood, Director."
"Alex and Nathan have been tracking this case for a while. How about we give them a few more days?"
"We'll find time to detain and question that Asian guy, Hunter Sun."
"If there's still no result, then we'll let it go."
Phil thought for a moment and was about to agree.
Suddenly, the office phone rang.
He gestured for everyone to wait, picked up the phone, and said, "Phil Harris speaking. What's the situation?"
A garbled voice came from the other end.
The others in the office looked away, pretending not to pay attention.
However, everyone's focus was actually on Director Phil.
Thus, they all saw the look on Director Phil's face shift from astonishment to gloom, and then to rage.
Soon, a roar erupted.
"Investigate! Investigate it immediately!"
"Don't let the LAPD handle it. Tell them we will investigate it ourselves."
With that, he slammed the phone down.
Director Phil looked at the black Deputy Director again, his eyes seemingly red with anger.
"Frye!"
He asked in a deep voice, "Which apartment building was it that you mentioned just now?"
Deputy Director Frye felt a sudden sense of foreboding.
He hurriedly recited the name of the apartment building where Hunter lived, then asked carefully, "Director, did something happen over there?"
Director Phil took several deep breaths to suppress his anger.
He looked at the people in the office with a grim expression.
"The LAPD just contacted us. They told us that in the apartment building you just mentioned..."
"An FBI agent we sent to monitor Hunter Sun... is suspected to have been killed by intruders during a home invasion robbery. He was shot five times!"
"When they arrived after receiving the call, three homes in that building had been robbed, and four people were shot dead by the bandits."
"All dead on the scene!"
"According to witnesses, there were four bandits in total. They fled after stealing some property."
The office fell into a dead silence.
Deputy Director Frye took a deep breath before shaking his head. "Impossible!"
"Although I don't know exactly which two agents were on rotation..."
"FBI agents aren't something a few random robbers can take down easily."
"Moreover, that agent was inside the apartment on surveillance duty."
"To encounter a home invasion robbery under those circumstances... it feels too deliberate."
Director Phil reacted too, his face dark: "You suspect someone specifically targeted him to kill him? Was it that Chinese-American, Hunter Sun?"
"Probably not!"
Deputy Director Frye shook his head. They had been monitoring Hunter for a while.
From past investigations, apart from possibly helping illegal car modifications to earn high fees...
And having a somewhat promiscuous private life... the Chinese-American youth had a very regular schedule and no other illegal activities were discovered.
If it weren't for Vince and Slant (the snitches) insisting that this youth was problematic...
The FBI wouldn't have wanted to continue the investigation.
"How about this? I'll send someone to confirm first."
"If it really has to do with Hunter Sun, I'll sign an arrest warrant immediately to capture him."
Director Phil nodded: "I leave this matter to you. Find out the truth as soon as possible."
He stood up to leave.
"Currently, the bodies have been taken by the LAPD. I'll go negotiate with them to prevent them from intervening further."
"Okay!"
After Director Phil left, Deputy Director Frye looked at his subordinates with a frown.
A senior agent immediately spoke up: "Frye, could this have something to do with Stansfield?"
Deputy Director Frye was open to ideas. Hearing this, he perked up. "Tell me your thoughts, Nathan?"
Nathan organized his words: "Someone tipped us off that a tenant named Michael in Hunter Sun's apartment building is hiding drugs for Stansfield."
"Not long after, one of our brothers monitoring that building ends up dead."
"This happened too suddenly and strangely. I don't think that Chinese youth could have done it."
Deputy Director Frye didn't think Hunter—whom they were monitoring—did it either, but he didn't know much about Stansfield.
He scanned the people in the office, clapped his hands, and issued orders.
"Brothers, one of our own has been murdered."
"Whether it was that Chinese youth..."
"Or home invasion robbers, or Stansfield..."
"Now, we have to find the real killer first."
"Move your legs, turn your brains, and activate all your informants."
"Go!"
The FBI finally began to take action according to Hunter's plan.
