The police had cordoned off the area, keeping everyone away. Mom spotted Caroline and me and drove us home. When I asked what had happened, she waved it off casually saying, "It's just some animal attacks. Nothing to worry about,".
Caroline stared out the car window, lost in her thoughts, while I scrolled through my phone, trying to distract myself. But no matter what I did, my mind wouldn't quiet. A gnawing sense told me that something was off—that these weren't ordinary animal attacks. The things we call normal… weren't normal at all. I let out a long, heavy sigh, feeling the weight of unease settle deep in my chest.
(A few days later)
Caroline had taken it upon herself to organize the entire Miss Mystic Falls float. Miss Carol Lockwood supervised every detail, making sure nothing was out of place. I was dressed in an 1860s suit while Caroline shone in her yellow gown. We posed for pictures with friends and family, smiling as best we could, though the tension between Matt and Tyler remained palpable.
Soon, the parade began. Caroline and I stood on the float, waving to the crowd, but a chill ran down my spine. Something terrible was coming—I could feel it in every nerve. Caroline noticed my expression and leaned closer. "Hey, are you okay? You look pale all of a sudden."
I forced a smile, trying to steady my voice. "Yeah… I'm fine. Really, I'm fine."
But no amount of composure could quiet the dread clawing at me. Every fiber of my body screamed that something was very wrong—worse than anything I had ever felt before.
.
.
Later, we were all gathered by the grill when the feeling hit again, stronger this time. My body went cold, my limbs heavy, and my vision blurred. Caroline rushed to my side. "Hey, Aaron, are you okay?" she asked, her voice full of concern.
Before I could respond, Mayor Lockwood appeared, calling his son over. "Go home with your friends," he said firmly. Tyler gathered everyone and led us toward the car.
As we drove suddenly Tyler covered his ears, but it was too late. The car swerved violently and crashed.
I had the least injuries, but Caroline wasn't so lucky. Internal bleeding left her in serious condition, and she had to be rushed to the hospital immediately. Even though I was relatively unharmed, my body still trembled and felt ice-cold, so I was taken along for observation. The sense of dread that had plagued me all day now settled into something far heavier—an unshakable certainty that everything had changed, and not for the better.
