The morning bell rang with a crisp, echoing clang, signaling the start of another day at Haneul-dong Middle School. Students shuffled into their classrooms, chatter filling the hallways like a lively current. Daewon and Aera walked side by side, still glowing from their hidden garden adventure.
"I wonder if anyone else found the sketches we left yesterday," Aera mused, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Probably not," Daewon replied with a small grin. "It's our little secret, for now."
As they approached the art room, a ripple of curiosity swept through the class. Whispers and sideways glances hinted at someone new. At the front of the room, the teacher cleared her throat, drawing everyone's attention.
"Class, we have a new student joining us today. Please welcome… Kwon Haejin."
A hush fell over the room as a tall, striking figure stepped inside. Haejin's dark hair fell in soft waves around sharp features, eyes glinting with a mix of curiosity and something unreadable. His uniform was pristine, but his posture carried an effortless, confident ease that made him seem older than his classmates.
Daewon blinked, momentarily lost in surprise. Aera's hand brushed his arm as she whispered, "He looks… different."
Minji leaned forward from her seat, whispering with barely contained excitement, "Whoa… transfer students are always mysterious. I bet he's talented at something."
Haejin's gaze swept the room, briefly pausing on Daewon and Aera. A subtle smile played on his lips, but it was the kind of smile that made people unsure if it was friendly - or something else entirely. He walked to the empty seat near the back, placing a leather satchel on the desk.
The teacher clapped her hands softly. "Haejin, please introduce yourself."
Haejin's voice was calm, smooth, almost melodic. "Hello. I'm Kwon Haejin. I recently moved from another district. I enjoy art and exploring… unusual places."
The class exchanged glances, intrigued. Unusual places? That sounded mysterious enough to make anyone curious.
Aera leaned closer to Daewon, whispering, "Unusual places? I wonder what that means."
Daewon shrugged, his curiosity piqued. "We might find out soon."
At lunch, the group gathered under the old cherry blossom tree in the courtyard. Haejin was already there, sitting alone on a bench, sketchpad balanced on his knees. His hand moved swiftly, creating intricate patterns that seemed almost alive, as if the paper itself carried a pulse.
Minji nudged Aera. "He's… amazing. Look at how he draws!"
Aera's eyes widened, captivated not only by the skill but the ease with which Haejin worked. Even Daewon couldn't help glancing, feeling a strange mix of admiration and a tiny, unfamiliar twinge of jealousy.
Unable to resist, he approached cautiously. "Hey… that's really impressive."
Haejin looked up, meeting Daewon's gaze. "Thanks. You must be Kang Daewon, right? I've heard a little about you and Aera… especially your adventures."
Daewon froze, a flush creeping up his neck. "Adventures?"
Haejin smiled faintly. "The hidden garden, the sketches… I've seen some hints around the school. It's rare to find people who appreciate hidden wonders."
Aera's heart skipped, hearing her secret garden being mentioned aloud. "You… you know about it?"
"Only a little," Haejin said, closing his sketchpad. "Maybe you can show me sometime." His tone was playful, yet there was something deeper, almost challenging in his eyes.
Minji, who had been watching silently, whispered to Jihun, "Oh wow… this is getting interesting."
Haejin's presence wasn't intrusive, but it had an undeniable pull. The way he spoke, moved, and even smiled made the afternoon feel charged, like the air before a storm.
After school, Daewon, Aera, and their friends returned to the hidden garden. Haejin followed at a distance, observing quietly, sketchpad tucked under his arm.
"This is it," Daewon said, gesturing at the ivy-covered walls and stone paths. "The hidden garden."
Haejin's eyes lit up. "It's… incredible. I can see why you love it here."
Aera blushed softly. "It's our little secret."
Haejin nodded, crouching to inspect the brass key and the chest from yesterday. "You really discovered something special. Few students would notice, let alone protect it."
Daewon felt a mix of pride and a strange tension. He didn't quite understand it, but something about Haejin's attention made his chest tighten.
Minji, sensing the subtle tension, teased lightly, "Looks like we have a new rival in secret-keeping."
Haejin chuckled, a sound both warm and teasing. "Maybe. But I don't intend to take the fun away. Just… add a little challenge."
Over the next few days, Haejin integrated into the group, his presence shifting the usual dynamics. He was quiet but observant, often noticing small details others missed. He could mimic Minji's laughter, comment on Jihun's sketches, and even challenge Daewon to little competitions - always fair, but always leaving Daewon slightly off-balance.
One afternoon, as they all sat sketching in the garden, Aera accidentally brushed her hand against Haejin's while passing a pencil. Her cheeks flamed pink. Daewon noticed instantly, his chest tightening as he tried not to overreact.
Haejin, however, only smiled faintly. "Careful," he said softly, almost teasing, "or you might discover something about yourself."
The words, simple as they were, lingered in the air. The friends laughed and joked, but for Daewon and Aera, a subtle storm brewed - a mix of admiration, curiosity, and the tiniest spark of jealousy.
That evening, as the sun dipped low and painted the sky in hues of gold and lavender, Daewon and Aera walked home together.
"He's… interesting," Aera said quietly, glancing at the fading horizon. "Mysterious, talented, and… kind of unpredictable."
Daewon gritted his teeth slightly, a protective instinct surging. "Yeah… he is. But don't worry. He won't take our garden or our moments away."
Aera smiled softly, sensing the unspoken emotion. "I know. But maybe… he can make things more exciting."
Daewon chuckled, though a part of him stayed alert, aware of Haejin's presence in their lives. A part that knew the summer of first love was getting even more unpredictable, heart-skipping, and… unforgettable.
And as the two walked under the warm evening sky, hands brushing, hearts beating, they both knew that the hidden garden - and their hearts - were about to face new adventures, challenges, and discoveries.
