"He will," Lucian replied, his gaze still fixed on the man on the table. "He has every reason to."
I didn't answer. My attention had already gone back to the body in front of us, something about it no longer matching the stillness from earlier.
His breathing was still uneven, still carrying strain, but there was a rhythm to it that hadn't been there before, something that suggested he wasn't as far gone as he had been.
"Look at him," I said, stepping closer without taking my eyes off his face.
Lucian moved in beside me immediately, his attention narrowing, while Zade came around from the other side, his interest returning just as quickly.
The first sign came from his hand.
His fingers moved slightly against the surface beneath him, not enough to be mistaken for anything, but enough to show that whatever had held him under was beginning to loosen.
Zade let out a quiet breath. "He's waking sooner than I expected."
