Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: A New Dawn for the Lin Family

The morning sun climbed higher, bathing the Lin estate in golden light. Word of the events spread swiftly through Qingyun City—the waste young master had awakened a dragon bloodline, crushing the Zhao family with ease.

By noon, the city was abuzz. Families that had distanced themselves sent gifts in haste. Those that had mocked the Lins now trembled.

In the small courtyard beneath the old plum tree, Lin Chen and Su Qingyao sat side by side on the stone bench.

The earlier chaos felt distant here. Only birdsong and the rustle of leaves remained.

Su Qingyao leaned lightly against his shoulder. "Lin Chen... these three years, were you always pretending?"

He nodded. "I needed time. And... I wanted to see who would stay."

She lifted her head, eyes searching his. "And now that you've seen?"

Lin Chen met her gaze steadily. "I see you clearest of all."

A blush spread across her cheeks, but she didn't look away. "Then... don't hide from me again."

"I won't." He reached out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered against her skin, warm and reassuring.

For a long moment they sat in silence, the weight of three years lifting like morning mist.

Yet Lin Chen knew this was only the beginning. Qingyun City was too small; the dragon soul's true legacy had to lie farther west, among Zhongzhou's sacred grounds, ancient ruins, and records of vanished bloodlines. Beyond the Lower Realm lay the Immortal Domain and, farther still, the Nine Heavens. For now, those were only names in broken legends.

And enemies far stronger than the Zhao family would come.

But with her at his side, he felt ready for anything.

As afternoon shadows lengthened across the courtyard, Lin Chen stood. "Qingyao, prepare yourself. In three days, we leave Qingyun City."

She rose without hesitation. "Where you go, I follow."

He smiled, the dragon within him humming in quiet approval.

The first breath of the dragon had shaken Qingyun. Soon, it would resound across the Nine Heavens.

The afternoon sun hung lazily over Qingyun City, casting long shadows across the Lin estate. News of the morning's events had spread like wildfire through the streets—whispers in teahouses, hurried messengers between clans, even children chanting crude rhymes about the "dragon awakening" in the Lin family. Gifts began arriving at the gates: rare herbs from neutral merchants, fine wines from families hoping to mend old ties, apologetic notes from those who had turned away during the dark years.

Inside the estate, the atmosphere was one of cautious joy. Servants moved with renewed purpose, their steps lighter, smiles flickering on faces that had known only worry for too long. The Lin family, for the first time in three years, felt alive again.

Lin Chen walked slowly through the main courtyard, Su Qingyao at his side. Her hand rested lightly in the crook of his arm—a small gesture, but one that drew warm glances from passing elders. The old plum tree in the rear courtyard had become their quiet refuge, but today the entire estate felt like an extension of that peace.

"Father has called a family banquet tonight," Su Qingyao said softly, glancing up at him. "All the elders, cousins, even some of the branch family heads. They want to... celebrate."

Lin Chen nodded, a faint smile touching his lips. "It's been a long time since the hall was full for something happy."

She squeezed his arm gently. "You deserve this, Lin Chen. We all do."

They paused near the training grounds, where a group of younger Lin disciples—teenagers mostly, in their Postnatal early stages—were practicing basic fist techniques. Seeing Lin Chen approach, they stopped mid-form, bowing deeply with wide eyes.

"Young Master!" one boy, no older than fourteen, called out. His name was Lin Feng, a distant cousin who had often snuck extra food to Lin Chen's secluded courtyard during the hard years.

Lin Chen waved them to relax. "Continue your practice. Strength isn't built in a day."

Lin Feng hesitated, then blurted, "Young Master... is it true? You really have a dragon bloodline? Can... can you show us?"

The others leaned in eagerly, faces flushed with hero-worship. In Qingyun City, tales of ancient bloodlines were the stuff of legends—stories told by traveling bards to wide-eyed children.

Su Qingyao hid a smile behind her sleeve. Lin Chen chuckled softly. "One day, perhaps. But true power comes from here—" he tapped his chest, over his heart, "—and here." He pointed to his temple. "Not just from blood."

The youths nodded solemnly, though disappointment flickered in their eyes. As Lin Chen and Su Qingyao walked away, excited whispers erupted behind them.

"He spoke to us!"

"The Young Master is so calm... like a real expert!"

Su Qingyao leaned closer. "You've become their idol overnight."

Lin Chen shook his head. "Idols fall easily. I just want them to grow stronger—so the Lin family never bows its head again."

They continued toward the patriarch's study. Lin Zhantian had summoned Lin Chen privately before the banquet.

The study was a quiet room lined with ancient scrolls and weapon racks—remnants of the Lin family's prouder days. Lin Zhantian sat behind a broad desk, reviewing ledgers. When Lin Chen entered, he looked up, eyes softening.

"Chen'er. Sit."

Lin Chen took the chair opposite, Su Qingyao excusing herself with a polite bow to wait outside.

Father and son regarded each other in silence for a moment. Lin Zhantian finally spoke, voice rough with emotion. "Three years... I failed you as a father. When your meridians broke, I searched every healer in the Eastern Domain. Spent half the family fortune. But nothing worked. I thought... I'd lost my only son."

Lin Chen's expression remained steady, but inside, the original body's lingering filial piety stirred. "Father, you did everything you could. The rest... was fate guiding me to something greater."

Lin Zhantian leaned forward. "This dragon soul—how did it awaken? And your strength... Late Innate already? In Qingyun City, that's unmatched."

Lin Chen chose his words carefully. He couldn't reveal his past life or the system, so he wove truth with omission. "The accident three years ago didn't just destroy my meridians—it buried something ancient inside me. I've been nurturing it in secret, waiting until I could control it fully. Revealing too soon would have drawn wolves before I was ready."

His father nodded slowly. "The Zhao family was only a small pack. Beyond Qingyun, sects like Tianxuan hold true monsters: Spirit Sea experts, even Divine Transformation elders. Farther west, Zhongzhou's holy lands gather the strongest powers of the Lower Realm."

Lin Chen met his gaze. "I know. That's why we're leaving soon. The Tianxuan Sect recruitment is in three months. I intend to take Qingyao and some promising juniors."

Lin Zhantian sighed. "The family needs you here now. With the Zhao humiliated, others will test us. But... you're right. Staying in this small pond will stunt your wings." He paused, then smiled faintly. "And Qingyao? You've finally stopped hiding from each other?"

A rare flush touched Lin Chen's cheeks. "Father..."

Lin Zhantian laughed—a deep, hearty sound that hadn't echoed in the estate for years. "Good! She's a fine girl. Ice Spirit Sacred Body, loyal heart. Marry her soon, give me grandchildren to spoil."

Lin Chen coughed lightly. "We'll discuss it after the sect."

As evening approached, the banquet hall filled with warmth and light. Long tables groaned under dishes: spirit beast roasts, herb-infused soups, rare fruits that boosted cultivation. Over fifty family members gathered—core branch, side branches, even loyal retainers.

Lin Zhantian sat at the head, Lin Chen to his right, Su Qingyao beside him. Elders raised toasts repeatedly.

"To the Young Master's awakening!"

"To the Lin family's rise!"

Lin Chen accepted the cups gracefully, but drank sparingly—his Dragon Emperor body processed alcohol instantly, but he wanted a clear head.

An older cousin, Lin Hao—a sturdy man in his thirties, Mid-Postnatal—stood with cup raised. "Young Master, three years ago when the Zhao forced that engagement, many of us wanted to fight. But we were too weak. Today... you've avenged us all."

Others murmured agreement. A female cousin, Lin Xue—Early Postnatal, bright-eyed and spirited—added shyly, "And Big Sister Qingyao... you've waited so long. We're all happy for you."

Su Qingyao blushed deeply, lowering her head. Lin Chen reached under the table, finding her hand and squeezing it reassuringly.

Later, as music from a hired troupe filled the air—soft guqin and flute melodies—Lin Chen slipped away with Su Qingyao to the rear courtyard. The banquet's noise faded behind them.

The old plum tree stood sentinel in the moonlight. They sat on the familiar stone bench, shoulders touching.

"It's strange," Su Qingyao murmured. "Yesterday everything felt heavy. Today... it's like waking from a long dream."

Lin Chen draped his outer robe over her shoulders against the cool night air. "Dreams end. Reality begins. But this reality—I want it to be good for you."

She turned to him, eyes reflecting starlight. "It already is. As long as you're here."

He brushed a thumb across her cheek. "Qingyao, these three years... thank you. For the soups left at my window. For defending me when others mocked. For never giving up."

Tears welled in her eyes, but she smiled. "I never could give up. From the first time you picked that plum blossom for me... I knew."

Lin Chen leaned in slowly, giving her time to pull away. She didn't. Their lips met—soft, tentative, then deepening with three years of unspoken longing.

When they parted, foreheads resting together, she whispered, "Lin Chen... promise me. No more hiding alone."

"I promise," he breathed. "We'll face everything together."

In the distance, fireworks from the banquet lit the sky—celebration for a family reborn.

But Lin Chen's thoughts drifted briefly to the wider world. The dragon soul hummed quietly, patient for now.

For tonight, this warmth was enough.

Far across the city, in the shadowed Zhao estate, defeated figures plotted in whispers. But that storm could wait.

Tonight belonged to home.
