The next morning, the sect bells rang before sunrise.
Disciples gathered in the central square beneath a sky still pale with dawn. Elder Yun stood on the stone platform with three peak masters beside him. When the last bell faded, the square quieted.
"This year's Three Peaks Trial will begin in five days," Elder Yun announced. "Pairs will enter the old training hollow between Dragon Sovereign Peak, Frostfall Peak, and Blazing Peak. Your task is to retrieve a bronze bell token and return before sunset. The hollow's formations are old, and some paths have not been used in years. Stay within the marked boundary. If you encounter danger beyond your ability, break the jade tag at your belt. A rescue team will be sent."
A ripple of excitement passed through the crowd. For the inner candidates, the trial meant more than a ranking. Those who performed well would be granted access to the sect's legacy chambers.
The Three Peaks Trial took place only once every five years. The hollow was said to predate the sect, and its formations responded differently to each generation. Some years, the candidates returned with little more than a token and a new ranking. In others, they came back with stories the elders refused to explain.
Lin Chen noticed the Blazing Peak master glancing toward the ridge beyond the square. Elder Yun's expression remained calm, but his fingers rested on the jade tag at his belt as if he were weighing an unspoken decision.
"You think the trial is more dangerous than they're saying?" Su Qingyao asked as they left the square.
"I think they're being careful with their words."
"Then we'll be careful with ours." She tapped the map tucked in her sleeve. "We should learn the old paths before we enter."
Across the square, Huo Yan watched them. Since taking the black bead, he had felt a dull heat beneath his palm, as though a coal had been buried there. The stranger's promise had been simple: it would lend him strength when he needed it. No one had mentioned the pain.
That night, he tried the bead in the privacy of his room. A thin line of black fire climbed his wrist. For a moment, his flame qi surged higher than it had ever reached. Then the heat folded inward and bit through his meridians. Huo Yan clenched his teeth until the flame died. Sweat cooled along his spine.
He hid his trembling hand beneath the blanket when Qin Luo knocked.
"You're still training?" his companion asked from the doorway. "The pairings go up tomorrow. You should sleep."
"I'll sleep when I'm ready."
Qin Luo studied his face. "Don't let Lin Chen get in your head."
Huo Yan looked down at his palm. A faint dark crescent showed beneath the skin, then disappeared. "He isn't in my head. He's in my way."
The following morning, the pairings were posted. Lin Chen and Su Qingyao were assigned together. Huo Yan would enter with Qin Luo. Elder Yun's gaze paused on the two of them.
"The trial rewards judgment as much as strength," he said. "Those who endanger their partners will answer to the sect."
Huo Yan met his eyes without flinching.
Over the remaining days, Lin Chen and Su Qingyao studied the hollow's surviving records and trained separately. Lin Chen practiced containing his dragon aura. His power wanted to answer every threat with force; controlling it demanded more patience than unleashing it. Su Qingyao worked on sending frost qi through narrow channels, precise enough to touch a formation without freezing everything around it.
On the fourth evening, they met at the stream below Dragon Sovereign Peak. He showed her how to read the current where it slipped beneath the stones. She showed him how a thin film of frost could reveal the slope of the ground.
"You notice the things people step over," he said.
"And you notice the things people hide."
Neither called it a plan. By the time they returned to their caves, they had begun to move as if the trial had already started.
A breeze crossed the square. Somewhere beneath the stone, something answered with a quiet, distant pulse.
