The cinema was dimly lit; only the shifting glow of the giant screen painted the audience in changing colors. Right then the film reached its climax: Shirou (Sasuke) and Hitomi (Sakura) had successfully protected the Princess of the Storm and neutralized the Snow Ninja vanguard.
Rock Lee's body snapped taut in his seat. His eyes went wide, his breath quickened, and his fists clenched until his knuckles turned white. Neji caught the change in Lee instantly; his hand flashed out, clamping over Lee's mouth. Almost at the same moment, Tenten's hand covered the other half of Lee's face. If they hadn't reacted, Lee likely would have vaulted over the seats shouting about the "Power of Youth."
"Mmph..." Startled, Lee could only let out a muffled groan. As the on-screen battle reached a fever pitch—explosions and swelling music driving the tension—the firm grip of his teammates slowly dragged him back to reality. When they finally let go, red marks lingered on Lee's cheeks.
"Sorry," Lee whispered with an awkward chuckle. "I nearly troubled you both again."
Neji withdrew his hand, his pale eyes reflecting the cold blue light of the screen. In his usual icy tone, he answered, "Watch the movie."
The Secret of the "Acting"
To their left front, Naruto—sitting between a mesmerized Hinata and a smugly grinning Hanabi—pulled his gaze back to the screen. He hadn't expected the entirety of Team Guy to be here, nor Kakashi and Guy sitting a few rows back.
On the screen, "Souma" (Naruto) hurled a kunai and instantly appeared behind an enemy in a golden flash. After the filming, Kakashi had sought Naruto out to ask about that specific "special effect." Naruto hadn't hesitated to tell the truth: the Hiraishin (Flying Thunder God) technique had been gifted to him by the Third Hokage.
Hearing that the Sandaime had approved it, Kakashi asked no further questions. He could only feel a deep, quiet pride that Naruto had finally inherited his father's legendary gift.
"Mmph-mmph!"
A few rows back, Kakashi was currently performing the same service for Might Guy. Seeing the reshot scene where Naruto used Earth Transformation to crush a tunnel entrance without a single hand-seal, Guy had nearly erupted.
"Keep it quiet," Kakashi hissed.
"Whew—that terrain-changing jutsu was so cool!" Guy whispered frantically once Kakashi let go. "Did you teach him that, Kakashi?"
"That move had no hand-seals at all; I have no idea what it is," Kakashi shook his head. In the film, Naruto's hand-seals were added purely for the cameras to hide his real methods. Battles between Shinobi are, after all, wars of information.
A Bittersweet Ending
Naruto-kun is right beside me! Hinata stared at the screen without seeing a single frame. Her heart was a frantic drum, and her peripheral vision was locked entirely on the boy next to her. Naruto-kun looks so handsome even without the whisker marks! On screen, the story reached its crescendo. With help from Gin-san (Kakashi), the Tyrant Dotō was defeated. The final scene shifted to an epilogue teaser: a boundless emerald plain stretching to the horizon where the snow had once reigned.
Souma and the Princess stood side by side, silhouetted against a dazzling seven-colored rainbow. A breeze stirred the grass; they shared a silent, heavy farewell before the credits rolled.
"Ugh..." A stifled sob broke the silence.
Kakashi turned to see hot tears streaming unchecked down Might Guy's face. The "Noble Blue Beast" was weeping openly, his voice thick with emotion.
"What a shame... such a terrible shame!" Guy choked out. "Souma's team has to return to their village... they can't stay in the spring to be with the Princess forever! Fate is so cruel! They... they really are star-crossed lovers!"
"Hey, Guy, calm down," Kakashi sighed, half-chiding. He leaned in close. "'Souma' is just a role Naruto played. This is only a movie. In real life, there's no romance between Naruto and the actress, Koyuki."
"Eh?" Guy froze, wiping his face with the back of his hand. Realization dawned on his tear-streaked face. "Right... you're absolutely right! I got too wrapped up! Still, Naruto acted brilliantly! The bittersweet parting of youth... it makes the blood burn!"
"All right, zip your collar up," Kakashi helped Guy straighten his vest. "We have to look solemn in front of the students later."
