Chapter 49 - In which she was a little bird

To Sullivan, it was but a statement of truth. An abrupt slip that came to him naturally. Given that he and Anna were of different species. But to Anna, it sounded like a huge distance between the relationship they had formed. 

She pressed her hands by her sides, the reality of his quickness washing over her face like constant ache. A throb she couldn't hide. A wince that didn't go unnoticed by the old couple.

The husband laughed, gentle hand going over his wife's back. "Oh, we must have guessed wrong then." 

The wife was reluctant in accepting Sullivan's words as Anna forced her displeasure into a neutral look yet a single muscle bunched in her cheek. A correction of how she really felt inside her. "She is not…?" The old woman asked in an unfinished question, the rest of it an understanding Anna misunderstood.
