Chapter 124 - 2nd Attempt XVIII

The air shrieked as the nine compressed stone drills tore through the vast cathedral hall, howling like vengeful spirits. They collided with the rising cage of living stone roots in a cataclysmic detonation. The impact was biblical. A shockwave erupted outward, slamming into the colossal pillars and rattling the vaulted ceilings high above. Midnight stone shards exploded in every direction, glittering like black diamonds in the silver-blue lamplight, while thick clouds of dust billowed upward, completely swallowing Agatha's silhouette.

Beaumont held his combat stance, feet planted wide, amber sigils blazing across his forearms like molten gold. His chest heaved, ribs protesting with every breath, but he refused to lower his guard. Hazel eyes pierced the swirling grey maelstrom, hoping for the wet crunch of breaking bones or a sharp cry of pain. Instead, the dust began to part with unnatural grace, swirling around a faint, shimmering dome of translucent violet light.

Agatha stood completely untouched at the center.

Not a single speck of dust marred her porcelain skin. Her ornate robes flowed as if untouched by the violence. The outer barrier flickered once with a sharp, crystalline hum, absorbing the last remnants of kinetic force before fading into perfect invisibility once more.

"Impressive weight," she noted, her voice carrying that same insufferable, casual elegance across the distance. "But ultimately just dirt."

Beaumont's blood boiled. "I'm just getting warmed up, Milady!" he roared, slamming both palms into the floor. Mana surged from deep within his core, flooding into the unique, warm-feeling stone of the fifth floor. The dungeon itself seemed to respond eagerly, almost affectionately, to his earth-born touch. The ground beneath Agatha bucked and surged like a living, angry sea. Jagged stone spikes, each one sharp as a broadsword and thick as a man's thigh erupted upward in a rapid, wave-like sequence, chasing her position with lethal precision.

Agatha didn't even blink, with a graceful tilt of her body, she rose effortlessly into the air, feet leaving the ground as violet energy shimmered faintly around her ankles. She drifted upward, the spikes passing harmlessly beneath her like a forest of failed spears.

"Oh, running away already?" Beaumont mocked, his hands weaving through a blur of complex gestures. He unleashed a rapid-fire barrage of earth spells, each one more savage than the last. Giant boulders materialized out of thin air above her, crackling with compressed mana, and hurtled downward like meteorites. Simultaneously, the floor beneath her twisted and yawned open into massive, snapping stone jaws lined with stalagmite teeth, trying to swallow her whole.

Each cataclysmic strike slammed directly into her invisible barrier with the sound of rolling thunder—CRACK! BOOM! CRASH!

A tiny, glowing fracture appeared in the air in front of Agatha.

Then another.

Beaumont's eyes widened with grim satisfaction. His raw, overwhelming power was actually forcing her magic to buckle. The spiderweb of cracks spread slowly across the violet dome, each impact sending visible tremors through the barrier. Agatha's smirk faltered for the first time, her expression tightening as she felt the sheer brute force behind his assault.

"You little pest," she hissed, voice losing some of its melodic silk.

She snapped her fingers.

Dark, oily portals ripped open by the dozens in the deep shadows between the colossal pillars. A high-pitched, manic screeching filled the hall as thousands of small, leathery-winged imps poured out like a living black cloud. Their red eyes glowed with feral hunger, fixated entirely on Beaumont. Razor claws and needle teeth gleamed in the lamplight.

"Seriously, this creeps?" Beaumont shot back, though a nervous thud echoed in his chest at the overwhelming numbers. He didn't retreat an inch.

He spun on his heel, arms sweeping outward. A massive, rotating ring of floating stone shields materialized around him, each slab thick, reinforced and spinning with deadly momentum. The first wave of diving imps slammed into the barrier with wet smacks and sickening crunches, their fragile bodies batted away like flies. With his other hand, Beaumont maintained relentless pressure on Agatha, splitting his focus with the precision of a veteran fighter.

He poured spell after spell into the chaotic battlefield. Shockwaves rippled through the ground, shattering any imps that managed to land and sending cracks racing across the stone floor. Volleys of razor-sharp stone shrapnel launched skyward, shredding through the flying swarm in bloody bursts of black ichor and dissolving ash. The air grew thick with the stench of dust and the metallic tang of imp blood.

Through the storm of screeching monsters and exploding rock, Beaumont's hazel eyes never left Agatha's floating figure. She drifted lazily through the air, chin resting on her knuckles, watching him like a bored patron at a particularly mediocre theater performance. Yet the glowing web of cracks on her barrier remained.

The swarm converged with renewed fury. Beaumont dropped his weight low, sweeping his right leg in a wide, powerful circle. The warm midnight stone answered instantly, rising into a perfect three-inch-thick ring of solid rock that spun violently around his waist like a living buzzsaw.

Screech! hud crack!

Lead imps dove headfirst into the rotating barrier and were instantly repelled, their bodies breaking against the reinforced earth.

An imp dropped from the vaulted ceiling directly above, claws extended for his skull. Without even looking up, Beaumont thrust his left fist skyward. A localized pillar of earth erupted like a piston, slamming the creature with bone-crushing force and pinning it violently against the gothic arches high above. The imp's screech cut off in a wet squelch.

To his left, three more imps slipped past the spinning ring, aiming for his blind spot. Beaumont executed a swift, athletic back-flip, boots leaving the ground for a heartbeat. As he landed, he slammed both palms into the floor.

"Tectonic Burst!" he barked.

A concussive shockwave rippled outward through the stone. The ground bucked violently, launching the three imps ten feet into the air. Before they could flap their wings to recover, Beaumont snapped his fingers. The stones beneath the airborne monsters reshaped instantly into jagged, spear-like fragments that shot upward, impaling them mid-air in a spray of dark ichor.

Through the chaotic cloud of dissolving imp ash and dying screeches, Beaumont kept his focus locked on Agatha. She still floated with infuriating nonchalance, but he could sense the shift, the way her mana subtly adjusted, reinforcing weak points in her barrier.

She's waiting for me to exhaust myself, he realized, breath growing heavier as a sharp pang shot through his bruised ribs. It's not happening.

Splitting his focus further, he kept his left hand pressed firmly to the ground, maintaining defensive tectonic ripples that pulsed outward from his feet, pulverizing any ground-based imps that dared approach. With his right hand raised toward Agatha, his amber sigils glowed with blinding, sun-like intensity.

"Let's see you dodge a moving landscape!" he shouted.

He ripped his right arm upward in a powerful motion. Two colossal pillars of stone, each thick as old-growth trees and veined with glowing amber energy tore themselves free from the floor on both sides of Agatha. The very dungeon groaned in protest at the massive extraction. With a violent inward jerk of both hands, Beaumont commanded the pillars to smash together like a pair of giant cymbals, aiming to crush her and her barrier into oblivion.

CRRRRRAAAAACK!

The collision was deafening. Shockwaves blasted outward, sending heavy chunks of debris raining down across the battlefield. Agatha's eyes narrowed. She didn't drop her defensive posture, but she tilted her body vertically and rocketed upward at the last possible moment, the pillars colliding violently just beneath her feet.

Beaumont smiled fiercely. He had anticipated the dodge.

Using his deep earth senses to track every falling fragment, he caught a massive three-ton boulder in his magical grip before it could crash to the ground. With a full-bodied pitching motion hips twisting, shoulders driving, he launched the boulder straight up at her like a cannonball hurled by a siege engine.

Agatha, still ascending, flicked her wrist. A blast of raw violet concussive energy lanced downward.

BOOM!

The boulder exploded into thousands of jagged, fist-sized shards that hung suspended in the air for a heartbeat.

"Gotcha," Beaumont muttered.

Instead of letting the debris fall uselessly, he seized control of every single fragment with his will. A sweeping motion of both arms transformed the explosion into a massive, screaming vortex of razor-sharp midnight rock shrapnel, a localized sandstorm of death. He directed the entire howling maelstrom to engulf Agatha from all directions, grinding relentlessly against her invisible barrier.

Crack! Crack! Shatter!

The sound of breaking glass echoed triumphantly through the cathedral hall. A large chunk of the translucent violet barrier finally sheared away, exposing Agatha's left flank. Violet motes of mana drifted downward like dying fireflies.

Agatha's bored demeanor shattered in an instant. Her porcelain face contorted into genuine irritation as she drifted backward, away from the grinding vortex. The swarm of imps seemed to frenzy harder in response to her anger.

"You persistent little insect," she hissed, her voice losing its silken quality entirely.

"Oh, did I scratch your shiny shield?" Beaumont taunted, wiping a mixture of sweat, dust, and imp ichor from his forehead. He dropped back into a low, ready stance, boots humming against the responsive stone, amber sigils still blazing. His body ached, mana reserves burning steadily, but his hazel eyes burned with fierce determination as he prepared for whatever nightmare she would unleash next.
