"I tried to be quiet," I said with a shaky smile. "I didn't want to wake you."
She walked over and wrapped her arms around me from behind. Her chest was warm from sleep, and for a second, I leaned into it.
"Why are you up?" she asked.
"Just thirsty."
"Another nightmare?"
I didn't answer. I didn't want to talk about the dark water or the wedding anymore.
"Why do you have them so often?" she murmured. Her hand reached up, touching my forehead and brushing back my hair. She rubbed my earlobe gently, a touch so soothing it made my eyes heavy. "Should we change the room? Get a different bed?"
The sleepiness hit me like a wave. I felt myself drifting, but I forced my eyes to stay open. I was terrified that if I fell back asleep, the dream would just start right where it left off.
