The island doctor looked at the patient with puzzled eyes. He had spent his whole life studying the human body, but the woman on the bed made him feel like a student again.
She had not been recovering for several days now. It was difficult for him to find a proper way to check her condition. He couldn't use the usual medicine on her. It wasn't just that she was pregnant—though that alone made it very hard to treat her. It was something else. She was entirely a different being.
"When will the fever go down?"
The voice belonged to Chairwoman Elara. She asked the question the moment the doctor stepped away from Lyra's side.
The doctor grimaced as he turned to face her. He knew that disappointing the Chairwoman was a dangerous mistake. He looked at his hands, which were shaking slightly, and then back at the woman on the bed.
