Jamie pinned Alex against the door. She twisted his hand behind him, forcing his face against the wood. They stared at each other. Alex looked at her with a gaze so sharp it felt like he wanted to snap her neck. But he couldn't move.
"Are you done now?" Jamie asked. Her voice was calm, almost bored.
Alex waited a few seconds before he gave a small nod. Jamie let him go and sighed. She walked into the center of her apartment and turned on the lights. The room filled with a warm glow. She began to take off her heavy coat, her movements slow and professional.
"How many times have I told you?" she said without looking at him. "You can't go outside."
"Because I'm supposed to be dead?" Alex asked. His voice was thick with anger. "And where have you been all this time?"
Jamie turned to look at his angry face. Alex flinched as she moved toward him, a reaction he couldn't hide.
"I was with Lyra's parents," she said.
