"Let's go," Aaron said, taking my hand and pulling me gently toward the room.
I let him.
"Why couldn't you sleep?" I asked again, forcing my voice to sound light, almost curious, even though my mind was anything but calm.
"I needed to go over some emails," he replied, sitting on the edge of the bed like nothing was wrong.
"Oh… I see," I said softly.
Something about the way I said it must have struck him the wrong way, because he looked up at me almost immediately, his eyes narrowing slightly as if trying to read through me.
He stood up.
"Why do I feel like you suddenly doubt me?" he asked.
My heart pounded, but I refused to look away.
"Well… I don't know," I replied quietly. "You tell me."
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he shook his head, irritation flashing across his face as he turned away.
"I don't have time for this," he muttered before lying down and pulling the sheets over his face, shutting me out completely.
