DAMIEN POV
The file slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the floor with a dull thud. I slowly moved my head towards the window, swallowing the huge lump stucked in my throat.
Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
"No..." she whispered at last, barely audible.
Her eyes darted back to the scattered papers as if she had somehow read them wrong. She hurriedly bent down, her shaking hands gathering the pages before flipping through them again, faster this time.
"No... no, this doesn't make sense."
Her breathing became uneven and she stood up, her entire body trembling.
She looked up at me, searching my face for even the slightest hint that this was some cruel joke.
"This..." she swallowed hard. "This is fake, right?"
I said nothing.
"It has to be." Her voice cracked. "People don't just... decide to die."
Silence.
She took a slow step backward, her eyes widening with every passing second.
