Chapter 14 - Minor confrontation with the authority

Nysa's office smelled of chalk dust and burnt coffee, a quiet haven of unfinished thoughts. The door opened with a soft creak, and two figures stepped in — representatives from The Authority, their expressions polite but sharp.

"We've been reviewing your latest systems," one said, voice smooth. "Your methods… unpredictable. They undermine the models we've relied on for decades."

Nysa glanced up from her calculations, calm. "Unpredictable is not failure," she replied. "It's observation. Humans are not equations. They're choices, risks, imperfections."

The second representative raised an eyebrow. "And yet, these imperfections can lead to losses. Mistakes. Chaos. Surely you see the danger."

"I see it," Nysa said. "And I see something else: the opportunity. The chance for people to act, to decide, to grow. If everything is perfect, nothing exists outside the plan. Nothing matters."

Aira stepped forward, her hands folded. "We're not destroying your systems. We're designing space for life to unfold. You fear what you don't control. I fear what happens if we never allow choice."

The two representatives exchanged a look, measuring the defiance in the quiet room. One tapped a finger against a clipboard. "You're asking us to trust chaos. To accept uncertainty as… a principle."

"Exactly," Nysa said. A small smile tugged at her lips. "Not principle as in abstract theory. Principle as in reality. Life will not be controlled. It will only be guided, softly, with care."

Aira's gaze drifted to the window, where a market below hummed with unplanned interactions — a child balancing a basket, a dog nudging a fallen fruit, a vendor smiling despite a ruined stall. The representatives turned reluctantly to follow her line of sight, seeing evidence without explanation.

The room was quiet. No victory. No collapse. Only understanding, tentative and fragile, like a candle flickering in the dark.
