After everything that had happened on campus, every calm moment felt temporary, like the school was only pretending to be peaceful until something else broke.
Still, the sun was out, students were moving between buildings, and for the first time in days people were laughing loudly again.
Lyra and Sienna had claimed a shaded path near the central courtyard, both of them meant to be heading toward class but clearly in no hurry.
"I'm telling you, today is the day." Sienna was mid-rant.
Lyra glanced sideways at her. "You said that yesterday."
"Yesterday was preparation. Today is execution."
"That sounds criminal."
"It's romance," Sienna corrected. "You wouldn't understand because you enjoy suffering."
Lyra laughed. "I don't enjoy suffering."
"You absolutely do. You reject peace every chance you get."
"What does that even mean?"
