Scyther collapsed the instant it was hit by Flamethrower.
It didn't even struggle.
One move.
Instant defeat.
Yas froze.
The apprentices of Yas Gym froze.
Even Charizard looked momentarily stunned.
Only Sam remained calm, as if everything had unfolded exactly as expected.
He wasn't surprised in the slightest.
Yas's Scyther had likely been forced into the Gym level through external means. Its real combat strength was barely comparable to a standard Gym-level Pokémon.
Charizard, on the other hand, had undergone a tremendous transformation after evolving. Its strength had already reached the mid-Gym level.
In terms of power, it crushed Scyther.
In terms of type advantage, it completely suppressed it.
If Charizard couldn't win instantly under those conditions, it might as well buy a block of tofu and knock itself out.
The Trainers in Yas Gym were nothing more than former street thugs or mercenaries hired with money. They had no loyalty to Yas whatsoever.
The moment Scyther fell—
The smarter ones ran.
Within moments, the once-arrogant crowd scattered like frightened birds. Only two or three die-hard followers remained.
Yas stood there, breathing heavily, unable to accept reality.
Sam frowned slightly.
Killing people wasn't an option.
This wasn't some lawless wilderness.
After thinking briefly, Sam made his decision.
"Charizard."
Charizard stepped forward and knocked out the remaining troublemakers cleanly.
Sam tied them up and dragged them back to Yas Gym.
Inside, the place was already empty. Word had spread quickly — anyone with sense had fled long ago.
Sam walked into the conference hall and picked up the phone.
He dialed Professor Oak.
After briefly explaining Dark City's situation, silence filled the line.
Professor Oak sounded exhausted.
"I didn't expect the officials here to be this bold…" he said quietly.
Then his tone hardened.
"Sam, stay in Dark City. I'm sending someone immediately."
"Don't worry. Everyone involved will receive the punishment they deserve."
Sam smiled slightly.
That was reassuring.
In the anime, Kaz Gym and Yas Gym had been punished lightly — merely helping rebuild the city after destroying it.
It was absurd.
Two gyms fought recklessly, ruined an entire city, possibly cost lives—
And their punishment was community service?
Ridiculous.
This time would be different.
With Professor Oak personally involved, Sam believed justice would be carried out properly.
---
Time passed.
No one from the Alliance arrived.
Just as Sam was growing bored—
BOOM!!!
A violent explosion shook the air outside.
Another explosion followed.
Sam's eyes narrowed.
The direction…
Kaz Gym.
Without hesitation—
"Come out, Charizard!"
After evolving, Charizard was finally large enough to carry him comfortably. Sam now had a proper flying partner.
Charizard spread its wings.
With a powerful flap, it shot into the sky.
It was significantly larger than an average Charizard — strong, well-developed, perfectly capable of carrying Sam without strain.
Within moments, they reached the scene.
From above Kaz Gym, Sam saw the situation clearly.
A Trainer with flaming red hair sat atop a Dragonite, hovering in the sky.
Below, a Charizard and an Aerodactyl were chasing down Kaz Gym apprentices.
The scene was intense.
Buildings were shattered.
Dust filled the air.
Yet despite the overwhelming force, none of the apprentices were killed. They were beaten, subdued — but spared.
Dragonite.
Charizard.
Aerodactyl.
Flaming red hair.
It was impossible not to recognize him.
"Elite Four Lance… why are you here?"
Lance had already noticed Sam the moment he arrived.
He guided Dragonite closer.
"Sam," Lance said calmly, "you did well. Thanks to your report, the Alliance uncovered the corruption in Dark City."
His expression was cold.
He had not expected officials under the Alliance's jurisdiction to be so rotten — allowing two private gyms to wage war, destroying the city while reporting nothing.
It enraged him.
That was why he had personally come.
He would purge the darkness himself.
Below them, Kaz Gym was nearly flattened. Every apprentice had been beaten into submission.
Sam took a slow breath.
His own method had been restrained.
Lance's method—
Was thunderous.
Lance noticed Sam's gaze.
"Sometimes," Lance said evenly, "to uphold justice, thunder must fall."
"Only overwhelming force can make those who hide in darkness fear the light."
His Dragonite let out a low roar.
The sky above Dark City felt different now.
For the first time—
It felt like change had truly arrived.
