Facing the Rock- and Water-type fossil Pokémon, Sam did not choose to have Charizard use Fire-type moves. Instead, he selected Fighting-type moves to counter his opponent.
A qualified Trainer should always choose the most appropriate moves when facing different opponents.
Charizard was already stronger than most fossil Pokémon. Using Fighting-type moves against them was like slicing through vegetables—there wasn't a single opponent it couldn't defeat in one hit.
With Charizard acting as the main force in battle, Clefable and Lapras were much more relaxed. They only needed to deal with any Pokémon that slipped through and handle the finishing blows.
The fossil Pokémon weren't stupid. After realizing the opponent in front of them was beyond their ability to handle, they prepared to retreat.
As for the two Pokémon trapped by Brock and Misty, they didn't care. After all, better someone else than themselves.
Just as the fossil Pokémon were about to withdraw, an accident occurred.
A furious roar erupted from the depths of the dark cave, echoing through the entire underground world.
The fossil Pokémon that heard the roar immediately showed fear on their faces. Powerful enemies like Charizard and Lapras stood before them, while behind them lurked a terrifying ancient predator.
They were caught between a rock and a hard place.
Unlike the others, Sam smiled the moment he heard the roar.
Had the Aerodactyl he'd been waiting for finally appeared?
His only hope now was that this Aerodactyl's talent would be good enough to make the trip to Dasha Valley worthwhile.
The roar grew louder.
A black shadow emerged from the darkness, finally revealing its true form—a gray, pterosaur-like Pokémon with razor-sharp teeth that radiated ferocity.
Perhaps it had been awakened from a long slumber. It did not look pleased. Its entire body felt like a powder keg ready to explode.
"Is that Aerodactyl?" Brock exclaimed after subduing Omanyte. "I didn't expect that besides Omanyte, Omastar, Kabuto, and Kabutops, there'd be a rare Aerodactyl down here too."
The long-awaited Aerodactyl had appeared.
Without hesitation, Sam activated the Eye of Detection.
---
Pokémon: Aerodactyl
Type: Rock/Flying
Strength: Mid-Gym Level
Potential: Elite
Evaluation: Due to sleeping for hundreds of years, its strength and potential have declined. However, as an ancient predator, it should not take many battles to regain its former power.
---
Sam couldn't have been more satisfied.
Even in its weakened state, it still possessed Elite-level potential—and it could recover further. If he let such a Pokémon escape, he wouldn't sleep well for weeks.
To avoid future regrets, Sam initially considered sending out Tyranitar to overpower Aerodactyl directly.
But Charizard seemed extremely interested in the opponent before it.
It casually tossed aside the frightened fossil Pokémon and spread its wings, flying straight toward Aerodactyl.
Aerodactyl was slightly surprised. It clearly hadn't expected anyone to challenge it instead of fleeing.
That surprise quickly turned into fury—and excitement.
It spread its wings and let out a piercing roar.
The cave shook violently.
Sharp stones formed above and hurled toward Charizard.
Stone Edge.
Sam did not dare to be careless. Rock-type moves were Charizard's nightmare. As a Fire/Flying-type, Charizard was severely weak to Rock-type attacks. If Stone Edge hit, Charizard would be seriously injured.
"Charizard, accelerate and dodge!" Sam commanded calmly.
Charizard immediately increased its speed, narrowly escaping the Stone Edge.
"Now use Fire Spin!"
Charizard opened its jaws and unleashed blazing flames infused with Fire-type energy, trapping Aerodactyl within a swirling vortex of fire.
Aerodactyl, freshly awakened and clearly rusty in battle, reacted half a beat too slowly.
That couldn't have been better news for Charizard.
Trapped in the flames, Aerodactyl roared in confusion, unsure how to respond.
On the sidelines, Ash watched the intense battle with envy.
"It'd be amazing if my Charmeleon could evolve into Charizard someday."
"Ash, don't get ahead of yourself," Brock said. "With your current strength, you wouldn't be able to control Charizard."
"Yeah," Misty added. "If Charmeleon evolves, it might not even listen to you."
Ash snorted. "No way. My Charmeleon listens to me the most."
While they argued, the battle reached its climax.
Aerodactyl finally realized something—the flames weren't actually harming it much. All it needed to do was fly out of Fire Spin's range.
It began flapping its wings to escape.
But Sam and Charizard would never allow that.
During Aerodactyl's moment of hesitation, Charizard had already closed the distance.
Now directly in front of it, Charizard plunged into the flames, grabbed Aerodactyl by the wings, and began spinning rapidly.
Fighting-type energy surged around them.
Seismic Toss.
The battle was over the moment Charizard seized Aerodactyl's wings.
